In the Wednesday issue of The Washington Evening Journal, Gerald Franzen stated, ?I remember when we wanted to build a new library and they said it wouldn?t use any taxpayer money and we are going to do it all privately.?

I was Chairman of The Washington Free Public Library Board of Trustees and of The Foundation during the time of construction of the new library.
Whenever financing of the new library was discussed, we made it very clear that we planned to have a public component; a bond issue, as part of the financing. The bond issue was approved by the voters. The remainder of the funds needed, came from donations.
The Washington Free Public Library is owned and operated by the City of Washington. The library is fee and open to the public.
