To the Editor:
Remember those invasions of World War II? Some will remember because they were alive during those times. Most of RAGBRAI participants will remember from historical records. Great sacrifices were made by all America to conquer enemies who were determined to destroy this great nation.
On Friday, July 29, watch down the roads from the west and south and another invasion is on the way. This time an invasion of thousands of riders on bicycles of every description and supporting drivers in numerous vehicles of all kinds, some almost beyond description.
The participants in this invasion are not bent on destruction. They are individuals and families who have planned a year for this special vacation to enjoy, with others of the same interest, to see the beauty of Iowa, to enjoy a week of recreation, camaraderie, make new friendships, and fun. On rare occasions boy meets girl, become enamored with each other and ending in marriage.
Lucy and I have participated in RAGBRAI 23 years, this making the 24th year. Two comments we have heard repeatedly are: 1) ?I never realized how beautiful Iowa is,? and 2) ?The hospitality of Iowans is simply fantastic.? All residents of our areas are encouraged to keep extending Iowa hospitality to RAGBRAI participants.
Inconvenience will begin about noon, and increase throughout the day. Vehicles will be jampacked in every location, bicycles will be all over the city, the mass of people will be everywhere. But consider, this will be only for one day. Julie Gentz, a former resident of Washington, made a statement I will always remember. She said, ?A person can do anything for just one day!? Certainly some will be inconvenienced; but just how much real time, five or 10 minutes, an hour, parking? In less than 24 hours it will all be over.
We know some who have made special plans not to be in Washington during this event. We hope they are enjoying themselves wherever they are; they will not be missed here.
Let?s treat this occasion as we would like to be treated in the same situation. As Jesus Christ said, ?Do to others as you would have them do to you.? Apply the Golden Rule: that?s the character of Washington and surrounding communities.
