Local author Dennis Laverty to speak at EV History Center
Aug. 30, 2022 11:06 am
NORTH ENGLISH — How many times have you said, “I wish I would have sat down with my grandparents or parents and written their memories on paper?” Or how about your own stories from the past? Dennis Laverty, Williamsburg, will present “Overheard at the Burg Grocery,” a program on that subject, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the EV History Center, North English.
In this program, taken from the title of one of Laverty’s books, he will discuss how people can find purpose and joy in recording family and community stories and memories. He will explain how he learned to do that and share examples of stories he has heard.
Laverty has written over 2,000 personal and family-related stories, taught writing classes in central Iowa colleges, lectured in colleges, churches, civic and genealogy groups, and published four books.
Born in 1944 and raised on a family farm near Laurel, he graduated from Drake University in 1967, majoring in business administration. He then worked as a commercial insurance underwriter and as a sales associate with a cleaning service until his retirement.
The EV History Center is located at 108 N. Main Street, North English. The public is invited to attend this free event. Donations are accepted.
