Gender balance sought for precinct election volunteers

State law, Iowa Code 69.16A, requires most boards and commissions be balanced according to gender. The Poweshiek County Auditor pursuits this goal. Yet, achieving this balance is extremely challenging.

During the last fiscal year, the gender ratio of precinct election officials was twenty-one females to two males.

Both Republican and Democratic Party Poweshiek County Central Committees should be submitting precinct election volunteer gender balanced lists to the County Auditor. Eligible voting males should be volunteering to serve as precinct election officials.

The serious obstruction of our gender balance law is not due to one person, but a shortcoming of our collective social responsibility to advance gender balance throughout our governing activities.
