In the book of Isaiah chapter 7 verse 14 we read “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel.” That name Immanuel means God With Us. We hear it during Advent and hear it in Christmas songs, but do we truly understand what that means. God with us is such a beautiful picture of Christmas. God is omnipresent, present everywhere at the same time” and that omnipresent characteristic is what makes Christmas such an amazing fulfillment of the promises that we read throughout the Bible.
God’s presence with us through the birth of Jesus Christ, brings us 4 amazing things. First, it brings us hope in hopeless situations. This hope exists even though we may not even realize he is there. The world prior to Jesus Christ was considered a morally, spiritually, and emotionally dark place. But out of that darkness came the hope that is Jesus. God’s very presence here on earth with us. Because he came we have hope.
The second thing that comes with God being with us, is peace. The peace that is strong enough to calm our fears. The scripture calls it the peace that surpasses all understanding or in modern day terms, peace that doesn’t make sense to the world because they have continued to respond out of the flesh rather than the spirit of God. That peace is the kind of peace that quietens anxiety and the calamity that is occurring in the world today. It does not ignore the issues but brings us through them with confidence on God to take care of them.
Thirdly, we have joy that God gives us even in the hard times that accompany the holidays. We have heard of the Christmas blues. However, the joy of the Lord gives us strength and the ability to see his hand working in our lives and the lives of others. We do not have to be distraught or beaten down. God desires for us to have joy that lasts.
Lastly, God being with us shows us something about love. The love that we see illustrated in scripture through Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. The kind of love that never fails. Other people may fail us, let us down, or even betray us, but God will never. His love never runs out and his arms are always outstretched to his creation.
These 4 things are there because of Immanuel “God With Us” We have to remember that Jesus birth was not just an historical event but rather a present reality for all believers. God is with us. We celebrate that not just at Christmas but all year-round. If you do not know that love, joy, peace, or hope, I encourage you to take this time to pray and talk to the Lord. You don’t have to be afraid. Just like the angels spoke to the shepherds in the field “Fear Not” Just talk to him like you would talk to a friend, and let him speak to you. Make your way to church, listen to the proclamations of the choruses and worship songs. He is here with us. He has never left and will never leave you or forsake you. Just call on him.
