As we approached Mother’s Day, many of us were filled with pleasant and warm thoughts about the matriarchs of our families.
Moms that held us when we were injured or sad, comforters when we were going through different crisis points in our lives, and laughter that warms our hearts and brings a smile to our face. There is another group of people who way have never experienced the true love of a mother’s touch and healing words. No matter which category you fit into or even if you have your own special category, mothers are the most influential people in our lives.
The Bible goes into great detail about mothers and their influence. One such verse is Proverbs 1:8-9 it says “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head, and a chain to adorn your neck. When we read the words of Solomon, the wisest person outside of Jesus in the Bible, we see that the teaching of a mother is like the victor’s crown for one who has won the race. The words and influence of a mother impact the thoughts and actions of their children. But, what if your relationship with your mother is fractured or dysfunctional? That is a great question.
Not only are their biological mothers but there are also spiritual mothers. These spiritual matriarchs may not have biological children of their own or their children may have grown and left to become mothers and families of their own. These spiritual moms take the opportunities given to them to be the godly female examples spoken about in the Bible. They speak lifegiving words of affirmation, teach godly womanly character, and offer support and help to women both young and old. The book of Titus chapter 2 talks about a mission of the older women instructing younger women in life. A mother is unique in that no one else can accomplish their mission given to them by the Lord. The characteristics of a woman are listed in Proverbs chapter 31.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, give thanks to the Lord for your mother and those spiritual mothers in your life that have helped you along the way. Celebrate the characteristics of them such as dignity, patience, diligence, generosity, courage, wisdom, and devotion. Without these godly women in your life, you would not be the person you are today.
Whether you are a married mom, a single mom, or a spiritual mom, understand you have a divine calling on your life. You have far more influence than you will ever realize. Never lose sight of just how important you are. Your life matters and the scope of what you do cannot be equated to a monetary value. You work long hours for no pay, you study to be the best mother you can be, you are expected to be a scholar by your children because you hold all the answers, and your children cling to you because they find you the anchor in the storms of their lives. Be blessed mothers on this the day we celebrate you and all you do.
