I recently went to Tanzania to visit the churches that Swedesburg supports there. They were celebrating their jubilee, and blessing the cornerstone of a new church building.
The Bible passage for the jubilee was from Psalm 126:1-6: “When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed. 2 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, ‘The LORD has done great things for them.’ 3 The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. 4 Restore our fortunes, LORD, like streams in the Negev. 5 Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.”
Psalm 126 was sung by God’s people as they journeyed to the temple in Jerusalem. The Israelites were expressing their gratitude for the amazing things God had done. After years of exile, God’s work of deliverance brought them back home to Mount Zion, where they could worship him freely again.
These words remind us of the great joy that filled the hearts of the children of Israel when they returned to their beloved city of God. The Lord’s hand was evident, and they sang songs of joy because they recognized God working in their lives. God turned their sorrow into joy, and their long exile into a time of restoration.
We also experience moments where God works in mighty and amazing ways. We face hard times, but when we trust in God’s promise, we see his hand guiding us through the storms of life. God is always at work in our lives. So, what great things has the Lord done for us? He has given us hope, peace, and joy through the saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has provided for our needs, and shown us his graciousness in tough times.
The joy the Israelites felt when they returned to Zion is the same kind of joy we can experience today when we reflect on the great things God has done for us. It is a joy that flows from the knowledge that God is good, and his love endures forever. Take some time today to consider the great things God has done for you.
When we remember God’s blessings, it fills our hearts with gratitude and joy. It also gives us the strength to face new challenges with confidence, knowing that the same God who has been faithful in the past will continue to be faithful in the future.
The psalmist’s words encourage us to trust in the amazing work of God, even when we cannot see it. There may be moments in your life when it feels like you’re still in the middle of the struggle, but the Lord hasn’t forsaken you. Trust in his plan, and his goodness.
