Sigourney — Young aspiring babysitters in Keokuk County took part in a fun and educational Babysitting Clinic hosted by the Keokuk County Extension Office in partnership with the Keokuk County Hospital and Clinics.
The daylong clinic gave youth hands-on experience and essential training to help them become safe, confident, and responsible babysitters. Campers learned basic first aid and CPR, built their own first aid kits, and participated in a “Poison or Candy?” activity where they had to identify common household items and decide whether they were safe or harmful — an eye-opening lesson in home safety.
The clinic also focused on toy, fire, and weather safety, as well as understanding the responsibilities of both the babysitter and the employer. Youth discussed the qualities of a good babysitter and practiced skills they can use when caring for children of various ages.
Annette Bell and Emily Belvel served as presenters throughout the day, leading engaging sessions and sharing important tips and information on safety, responsibility, and child care. Their enthusiasm and knowledge helped make the clinic both educational and fun.
A highlight of the day was a visit from Cody Davis of the Keokuk County Hospital Ambulance Crew, who gave participants a tour of an ambulance and explained how each piece of equipment is used in emergencies. His engaging presentation gave youth a behind-the-scenes look at emergency care and reinforced the importance of being prepared.
“This clinic offers more than just babysitting tips — it teaches real-life safety skills and builds confidence,” said Emily Belvel, Program Coordinator. “We’re grateful for the support from the Keokuk County Hospital and Clinics and for everyone who helped make this event a success.”
