Atkinson presents ‘Voices around the World’ at the Richland Public Library
Jul. 20, 2023 12:37 pm
Tuesday, July 11, Amanda Atkinson, with help from her daughter Zoey, presented a library program about the many "voices" and cultures found around the world. Amanda talked about the Huichol people, who live in Mexico and the southwest United States, and read the book "The Journey of Tunuri and the Blue Deer: A Huichol Indian Story" by James Endredy. The book featured pictures made of the intricate yarn "paintings" that the Huichol people are famous for. She also passed around yarn paintings that were made by some of her students.
Amanda handed out a colorful selection of yarns and invited everyone to make two different Huichol crafts: yarn "paintings" using traditional patterns and Ojos de Dios, also known as God's Eyes. The work took a lot of concentration and patience, but was well worth it!
