Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Jefferson County is hosting a beginning beekeeping course, starting in January. Join us to learn about bee biology, pests, types of frames and equipment, hive placement and maintenance, resources, honey extraction and processing, and making beeswax products. This course will be taught by beekeeper Dan Whitmore of Selma. Dan has experience with both the conventional Langstroth hive system and the Layen horizontal hives; he will teach about both of these methods. He has taken inspiration from Dr. Leo Sharashkin and Fedor Lazutin to create ideal habitat for bees, strengthening their resilience. He also engages in capturing local bee swarms.
Beekeeping Basics will take place on Tuesdays, Jan. 20 and 27, and Feb. 3 and 10 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Jefferson County Extension Office, 2606 West Burlington Avenue, Fairfield with a light meal provided each week at 6 p.m. Cost is $10 per person total for all 4 weeks. Jefferson County 4-H members can register free of charge. Online registration can be found at https://go.iastate.edu/BU1NCX or register by calling the Extension Office at 641-472-4166.
