Hello Pekin Community,
It’s truly an honor to be asked to serve as superintendent of Pekin schools for the upcoming year. Since graduating from here some 40 years ago, I have always had tremendous pride to be from Pekin. I couldn’t have asked for better role models in the teachers, coaches, administrators and staff in my formative years.
The other theme I have grown to appreciate over the years is the sense of community that I recall being very evident even though we were and still are made up of separate towns. There was and still is unity in how our students are supported.
I believe pride and community are the two core values we need to continue to build on going forward. There are so many well-intentioned people that I’ve met or become reacquainted with, which is very encouraging. Pekin Pride is very much alive in the many conversations I’ve had with people, and I look forward to many more.
Our sense of community has had some challenges recently, that I want to assure are being addressed. Concerns need to be taken seriously, even if not shared by everyone. I believe trust is built by listening and reflecting on concerns that are raised. Every school district has conflict from time to time. Leadership and working together as a community will get us through and help us be stronger.
There are some current things we’re working on as the summer progresses. Our normal summer cleaning and maintenance is on schedule. We just completed an asbestos abatement project at the high school, and some updates associated with that. Other summer projects include painting the commons area and resurfacing the gym floor. The board recently approved purchase and installation of new stage lights which will richly enhance our fine arts programs.
An extensive outdoor project involves replacing the concrete retaining wall on the home side, and installing new sidewalk on the visitor side of the football field/track. Additionally, new bleachers will be installed on both sides just prior to the beginning of football season.
Other facility projects the district is considering include interior renovations at the elementary building, playground resurfacing and equipment updates. These projects are necessary to be addressed in the near future as costs continue to rise. The district is working with Carl A. Nelson to develop a plan that is financially feasible, while at the same time providing our kids and staff with a high quality and safe learning environment. More information will be forthcoming soon.
Finally, I would welcome the opportunity to come out and visit with groups in the Pekin community. I enjoy sharing about our school, as well as listening and getting to know people. In my case, it’s especially enjoyable to renew acquaintances. Please reach out if your group would like to set up a time for a visit.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve a place that’s very special to me personally, and I will work hard to continue building pride in our Pekin Community.
Sincerely,
Jeff Maeder, Superintendent
