67 4-H and FFA members from the Washington County area and beyond participated in the livestock judging contest at the Washington County Fair Monday, July 14.
Livestock judging consists of analyzing animals and measuring them against a standard that is commonly accepted as being ideal for that species. In a competition, youth analyze four animals of each species and rank them from best to worst. The animals used for the county fair livestock judging competition were all 4-H projects on the fairgrounds being exhibited by other 4-Hers.
Youth competed in teams and also for individual points at the county fair contest. Cash awards are given to the top individual junior, intermediate and senior judgers as well as banners. Champion banners were given to the top team in each age division.
The top senior team came from a variety of Washington County 4-H clubs including Garrett Greiner, Ella Greiner, Jack Greiner, and Carter Schott. The 2nd place senior team came from Clinton County 4-H. Garrett Greiner of the Dutch Creek Flyers was awarded the Top Senior Judge and was presented with a special cash award in honor of long time 4-H Club leader Howard Bohr.
Bohr believed in growing youth leadership and believed strongly in the value of communication skills. He was a true champion of public speaking. His guidance and teaching led to the development of hundreds of youth in those areas. Howard’s love for livestock judging was also his passion. He loved to share his knowledge with youth and challenged each individual with the abilities to judge livestock and give reasons for their choices. He was seen often in the barns encouraging 4-Hers and selecting animals for the county fair livestock judging contest. To honor his legacy in these project areas, his family is proud to recognize 4-Hers who excel in the 4-H areas Howard loved.
The top junior team came from a variety of Washington clubs and included Covert Greiner, Emerson Flynn, Callie Brink, and Anna Greiner. This team earned first place honors at the Iowa State Judging Contest this spring. The 2nd place junior team came from the Clinton County 4-H. Jack Wayson of Benton County was awarded the Top Junior Judge.
The top intermediate team came from a Clinton County 4-H. The 2nd place intermediate team came from the Benton County. Kara Olson of Clinton County 4-H was awarded the Top Intermediate Judge.
The Washington County 4-H Livestock Judging program is led by volunteers Derek Henningsen, Chad Younge, Ted Greiner and Dustin Ford.
