McWhirter wins meet, Glosser takes second, at districts

The Pekin boys won the district meet last Thursday hosted by South Hardin and held at Pine Lakes Golf Course. The Panthers won with 47 points to secure their spot in the state meet this Friday. St. Edmond took second with 87 points, and North Butler Greene was third with 103.
Leading the race was Pekin’s Brady McWhirter, who won in a time of 17:30.3. Joining him with top 10 finishes were Mason Dahlstrom in eighth in 18:51.4 and JaeDon Wolver in 10th in 19:17.6.
Freshman Lane Fariss finished 12th in 19:27.2, while Cole Millikin was 16th in 19:54.0.
Ben Guise finished 36th in 20:57.5 and Dylan Sobaski finished 60th in 22:11.4.
The Pekin girls’ team will be making their 20th consecutive trip to the state meet Friday after finishing second at the district meet last Thursday by one point. St. Edmond won with 36, while Pekin was one point behind with 37.
Chloe Glosser finished second overall with a time of 20:33.9, while Lauren Steigleder finished fourth in 21:51.3.
Audrey Fariss also had a top 10 finish, taking 10th in 22:50.5.
The rest of the Panther team was close behind with Abby Guise finishing 18th in 24:37.5, Breanna Drish finishing 21st in 24:47.8, Lexi Swearingen taking 24th in 25:03.7, and Cambree Earnest finishing 31st in 25:51.8.
The Class 1A girls’ race at the state meet will begin at 2 p.m. at the Kennedy Park/Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge Friday, with the boy’s race following at 2:45. The Class 1A awards ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m.
Pekin’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams will be competing in the state meet Friday, October 27. The boys’ team of (back, left to right) Dylan Sobaski, JaeDon Wolver, Cole Millikin, Brady McWhirter, Ben Guise, Lane Fariss, and Mason Dahlstrom won their district race last week, with McWhirter winning the race. The girls’ team of Lauren Steigleder, Lexi Swearingen, Abby Guise, Audrey Fariss, Cambree Earnest, Breanna Drish, and Chloe Glosser finished second at districts, missing first place by only one point. This marks the 20th consecutive year the girls’ team will be running in the state meet.
