February 1975
Dave Eidahl of Richland and Ericka Dahlstrom of Martinsburg established new state walking records as they took part in the University of Illinois Indoor Track championships. Ericka placed second as she walked the mile in 9.53. This is a new women’s indoor mile record. Dave walked 51.27 for 10-kilometers which broke the all-time Iowa record.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Adrian Feb. 16, was a son, Jeffery Brian. He weighed seven pounds and six ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Howard Adrian, Mr. and Mrs. John B. combs of Washington. Great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Will Adam of Fairfield and Mrs. Parnall of Odessa, Texas.
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Dickey of Packwood are the parents of a daughter, born Feb. 16 at the Jefferson County hospital. Amy Christine weighed eight pounds and 14-1/2 ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dickey of Packwood and Mr. and Mrs. Harold McIntire of Fairfield. Mrs. Myrtle Dickey of Fairfield is the baby’s great-grandmother.
Dr. Gene Hoy reported on progress of the fund drive for the new Richland Library at the regular meeting of the Richland Commercial Club. He reported that approximately $15,000 has been received and that the building on the future site will be removed in the near future.
Nine Pekin wrestlers earned the right to advance to the district tournament competition as they led the Panthers to the sectional meet title at Columbus Junction. Coach Bill Rex and his grapplers brought home three individual titles and six runners-up as they finished at the top of the nine-team meet. Pat McHugh, Roger Wright, and Dan Hadley each won titles. Runners-up were Randy Reinier, Gary Kessel, Brent Underwood, Kim Reynolds, DA Fye, and Brian Smith. Kessel suffered his first defeat of the season, while McHugh maintained his undefeated record.
Keokuk County authorities and Richland Town Marshal, Bill Muenzenmeyer, are continuing their investigation into break-ins at three Richland businesses. The businesses involved were Baker shell Service owned by Everette Baker, Fritchen Farm Store owned by Donald Fritchen, and Richland Builders Supply owned by Steve Adam. In all three cases entry was gained by breaking the glass in the front doors. One tire was taken from the service station while $15 in cash was taken from the farm store and nothing was reported missing from the lumberyard. Everette Baker discovered the service station and farm market break-ins about 6:20 a.m. Sunday and notified Muenzenmeyer.
February 1985
On Feb. 8, 1985, the Pantherette basketball team gave their coach an early valentine by defeating the Lone Tree girls, 58-40, reaching Coach Jerry Horton’s 200th victory at Pekin. Horton has been coaching at Pekin for 13 years and has had 342 victories in 22 years overall. The Pekin offense was lead by Kathy Snow with 34 points, followed by Carol Johnston with 14 and Janette Williams with nine. Leading defensive players were Shelley Ruggles, Jeanette Rose, Sheila Hoover, and Stacy Leathers.
Mr. and Mrs. Chalmers Hoskins were guests of honor at a 40th wedding anniversary celebration held at the Stever House in Fairfield. The event was hosted by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Mel Maeder, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Dunaway, and Mr. and Mrs. Bub Hoskins and families. 52 Guests and family members attended. The family also celebrated on Sunday, spending the day with each other.
