Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gillis, and son Roger, are the new operators of what is now known as the Snack Shack, formerly operated by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence “Shorty” Bailey. The café was remodeled and enlarged by the Baileys. Health and other business reasons are why the Bailey’s sold. Mr. and Mrs. Gillis (Earl and Pansy), and Roger, will be assisted by Mrs. Howard Thomas and Mrs. Russell Parsons. The café will be open daily, except Sunday. An open house is planned in the near future.
Army Specialist 5 Clyde L. Derby, whose wife, Christa lives in Richland, was assigned to the U.S. Army Support command, Vietnam, April 20, as an airframe repairman. The support command advises the armed forces of the Republic of Vietnam on training, use of equipment, and tactical operations. Specialist Derby entered the Army in 1958.
Collision accident Wednesday morning at the intersection of highways 77 and 78 involved vehicles driven by Rufus McCracken of rural Richland and John Rich of Washington. Result of the collision demanded immediate medical service. Injured was Scott Rich, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rich of Washington. The boy was not seriously injured and received emergency treatment at the office of Dr. T.R. Wolf. Damages to the vehicles involved was not extensive. Mr. McCracken was coming from the south and entering highway 78 and the car driven by Mr. Rich was traveling west on highway 78.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Reighard are the parents of a daughter, Lisa Dee, five pounds, born Saturday morning at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Phil Stanley of Sidney and Mr. and Mrs. George Reighard. The baby was transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for surgery. She is reported to be recovering well.
Mrs. Frank Fritchen was admitted Thursday to Jefferson County Hospital for medical treatment.
Mrs. Ted Spray came home Friday from University Hospital, where she had surgery last week. Mrs. Rufus McCracken is assisting in the home. Mrs. Jack Hesseltine cared for the infant daughter of the Spray’s while Mrs. Spray was hospitalized.
Mrs. Jerry Allen was admitted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Sunday for tests and observation.
Don Will of Ollie is a medical patient in Keokuk County Hospital for treatment of a heart condition.
Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Bottorff called Sunday afternoon on Miss Lois Wade, who is a medical patient at Jefferson County Hospital since last Tuesday.
John Reighard underwent surgery on his elbow at Mercy Hospital Thursday. John was injured in a fall while trimming a tree, sustaining fractures and other injuries. When John was admitted to the hospital following the accident, Miss Winifred Kelly of Washington, sister of A. Joe Kelly, was one of the staff at the hospital to take care of him. Miss Kelly, an anesthetist, works at Mercy Hospital each Friday, and at Washington County Hospital the rest of the week.
Becky Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Allen, was treated at the Jefferson County Hospital Friday morning where chose to 30 stitches were taken in gashes on her arm caused by a fall on a milk jug.
Navy Ensign Jerry C. Woolums, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor V. Woolums of Packwood, is serving aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Goldsborough, homeported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which rescued three Navy men April 17 after their early warning aircraft made a forced landing on the South China Sea.

Roberta Paxson, Mary Lou Bottorff, and Duane Hadley, students from Richland who are attending Iowa State Teachers College, entertained their mothers last weekend at Cedar Falls. Special Mother’s Day activities were held, and services were held at the college chapel Sunday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Clair (Pudge) Hoekstra are the parents of a son born May 2 at the Washington County Hospital. The baby has been named Thomas Andrew, and has a brother, Bill. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hoekstra and Mrs. Ruth Huff, Keota, are the grandparents.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Downey have received word of the birth of their first grandson. Parents are Raymond and Rosalie Miller of Topeka, Kansas. A/3C Miller is in the Air Force. The Millers also have daughter, LuAnn. The baby son weighed seven pounds, but no name had been selected at the time the Downeys received the word of his birth.
