1965
This year the 1965 Crisco Award to the outstanding Home Economics student goes to Denise Gott. She was selected by her Homemaking teacher out of 12 eligible senior girls. Denise has completed three years of homemaking at the secondary level and has been outstanding academically each year. Her class achievements have always been carried over to the home life. She placed with her wool winter coat in the district division of the national “Make it With Wool” contest held in Mt. Pleasant last fall.
Six pupils have perfect attendance so far this year in third grade. They are Dennis Sobaski, Donna Neff, Deborah Leppert, Denise Leppert, Lyle Greiner, and Deanna Spray.
1985
Tom and Kathryn Hoskins are the proud parents of a baby daughter. Pheobe May arrived May 14 weighing seven pounds, three ounces. She has three sisters to welcome her home: Carrie, age eight and a half, Amanda, age seven, and Dollie, age two. Grandparents are Tom and Beverly Hoskins of Richland and Robert and Phyllis Gott of Ollie. Great-grandmothers are Rada Hawley of Ollie, Cecile Coffin of Richland, and Maude Hoskins of Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.
Linda and Vern Reiner of Fairfield are the parents of a baby boy, Eric James, who weighed six pounds, 15 ounces, born May 12 at Jefferson County Hospital. Baby Eric has a sister, Lindsay, age two. Local grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Weller of Fairfield and Mr. and Mrs. Garry Deitrich of Ollie.
Carl and Mary Conger of Packwood received work of the birth of a great-granddaughter, Megan Teal, born May 8, at St. Louis, Missouri to Gary and Kathleen Teal. She weighed five pounds and 13 ounces.
David and Gloria Cowguill of Cedar Rapids have a baby son, Andrew Jay, eight pounds, born May 17. This is the couple’s first child, and the first grandchild for the proud grandparents, Jay and Mary Cowguill of Packwood.
Jim Silvers, son of David and Cathy Silvers of Ollie, celebrated his 9th birthday on May 20 with supper, ice cream and Cake, served at his home. Present were Latisha and Michael, his sister and brother; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schultz; Mr. and Mrs. Gary Schultz, Jeremy and Jared; Mrs. Anna Schultz of Ollie; and Mrs. Ruby Silvers of Packwood. On Wednesday, the 22nd, his parents and Latisha took Jim and four classmates for pizza and skating. Those going were Chad Ingle, Matt Parsons, Scott Dickey, and Chad Gillam.
Jo Chambers of Packwood, along with her sisters Rose Hendricks and Colee Hospers, both of rural Fairfield, took their sister-in-law, Benna Coop to lunch on June 1 to the Silver Dragon Restaurant in Fairfield. Benna is leaving to join her husband Bernard in Austin, Texas, on the weekend of June 8. Also going will be their daughters Kristen and Kim. Another daughter, Sherry, who is employed in Ottumwa is also going.
Nancy Maeder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Maeder of Richland, has been awarded a Pre-Ministerial Scholarship to attend Central College this fall. Maeder is a 1985 graduate of Pekin Community High School where she played softball and was active in band and chorus. She was also a member of the National Honor Society.
2000
Graduation parties were held for Ollie area graduates. Whitney Snakenberg and Jon Schuttlefield held theirs Saturday evening at the Ollie Community Building. Sunday, Roger and Beverly Winn hosted a party for their granddaughter, Faith Harbison of Richland, at the Winn home in Ollie. Nicole Baker and Kurt Power held theirs at the Ollie Community Building, and Amy Reinier held hers at the Ollie Masonic Hall. Sandra Molkenthin was honored at the home of her parents, Robert and Gail Molkenthin. Amy Shy was honored by her parents, Jim and Pat Morgan.
Jane Hall had a heart catheterization at the University of Iowa Hospitals last Tuesday. Sue Gill, Peg Sobaski, and Jean Green went up and brought her home Thursday. They stopped at the Washington Hy-Vee and got caught in the tornado warnings. The sirens went off two times before they finally were able to come home.
Mary Wolcott took Mabel Wolcott and Doris McCracken to Burlington on Saturday to go shopping.
Susan Ulin took Edith Nordyke to Iowa City for an eye appointment on Thursday. Susan and Brian took Edith out on Saturday night for her birthday at the Catfish Place. Susan attended church at the Methodist Church with her mother on Sunday.
2005
Sam and Irene Ritchie attended preschool graduation for Tyler Derwin in Des Moines, they also attended one of his T-ball games.
Wayne and Iola Parsons, Tim and Nancy Parsons, and Dennis and Rita Eastman enjoyed supper together on Thursday at Applebee’s in Ottumwa to celebrate anniversaries.
Alisa Meacham hosted a birthday party for her daughter Mindy on May 20. Mindy and a friend from college came home for her brother’s graduation.
Dale and Rosie Sasseen met their friends, the Miller’s, at Kalona for lunch on May 17. In the afternoon they visited Edith Morrow at the Jefferson County Hospital.
Bob and Nancy Winn had some of Bob’s Vietnam buddies as guests recently. They came to hunt turkeys. Nancy treated them to homemade rhubarb pie.
