2015
Caryl Smith, with daughter-in-law Jacklyn of Brighton left May 7 on a plane to Maine. They stayed with Caryl’s son Jerry and Judy Smith with Justin in Orrington, Maine. Justin graduated from the University of Maine at Bangor on May 9. Jerry, Judy, Caryl and Jacklyn were joined by Jerry and Judy’s son David of Portland Maine for the graduation ceremony and dinner party. Jerry and Judy hosted the dinner party at their home that evening for 40 guests. Caryl and Jacklyn returned home on May 12.
Megan Berry graduated from Odessa High School on May 14. Their ceremony took place in Warrensburg, Missouri. Among those attending included her parents, Tim and Rita Berry with Isaac of Bates City, and Grandma Winifred Fritz of Brighton. Her parents hosted an open house at their home in Bates City on May 16. Special guest was Grandma Fritz of Brighton. Aunts, uncles, and cousins from the local area included Greg and Deb Fritz of Fairfield and their daughter Sarah and Craig Sides with Brantley and Holden of Kansas; Lucy Dietzman with Malcolm and Brenden of Keosauqua; Mary Boatright with Bridget Hollingsworth of Fairfield; and Joe and Lori Fritz with Julia, Sophia, and Michael with a friend from Brighton.
Tony and Angela Garmoe with James and Christopher of Mount Pleasant and her mother, Pat Remington of Brighton, enjoyed a trip to Chicago May 14. They spent several days sightseeing and visiting museums before returning home on May 18. The Garmoes also took in the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates game on April 15.
Ginny Brinton enjoyed the weekend of May 22 at the home of her brother, Fritz and Nancy Gowey in Milan, Illinois.
Providing the evening meal of May 24 at the home of Winifred Fritz were her children: Lucy Dietzman with Malcolm and Brenden of Keosauqua, Joel and Mary Boatright of Fairfield, and Tony Fritz of Brighton with friend Lynn of North Liberty.
Geri and Mel Scheller, Gerald Pacha’s twin sister from Kansas, celebrated 50 years of marriage Sunday, May 31 at St. Joseph & Cabrini Church in East Pleasant Plain. During the Church service, they renewed their wedding vows. A family dinner and reception was held at Lake Darling Lodge for their brothers and sister and their families, as well as friends and neighbors. Gerald and Rosemary hosted a wiener roast on the pond at their farm on Saturday for Mel and Geri, their children, and grandchildren, who all live in Kansas City and Emporia, Kansas. The Pacha farm is a Century Farm where Gerald and Geri grew up and the children wanted to come back to the “home place.” Everyone had fun touring and hearing stories of growing up on the farm. Lots of pictures were taken.
Angela Garmoe with Jimmy and Christopher of Mount Pleasant met her mother, Pat Remington of Brighton, in Washington on May 20. They dined at The Frontier.
On May 22, Pat Remington went to Mount Pleasant. Angela, Jimmy, and Christopher joined her for dinner at Jerry’s Cafe in Mount Pleasant.
Cody Remington, with friend Mackenzie of Mason City, visited his grandma Pat Remington on the afternoon of May 25. They went to Sigourney to dine at The Sigourney Cafe that evening. Pat went to Mount Pleasant to spend the evening and night with Angela, Tony, Jimmy, and Christopher.
Bill and Sue Gill went to Knoxville on May 23 for a gender reveal party at Blaine and Amber Gill’s. Other guests included Bill and Carolyn Schwartz of Hedrick, Amanda Robertson and kids of Hedrick, Amy Schwartz of Delta, and other friends of the couple. It was revealed that the couple is expecting a boy — congratulations!
Bill and Sue Gill, along with his sister Joanne Scearcy, went to Marshalltown Sunday, May 31 for a graduation party for their great-nephew, Dylan Gill.
Trenton Northup recently graduated with honors from Indian Hills with a degree in laser and optics technology. He will be leaving soon for Livermore, California where he will be working at National Laboratory for Applied Sciences and Technology.
Kayla Northup graduated from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. She now has her license for occupational therapy.
Twelve members of Billy and Wilma Northup’s family were home for a late Mother’s Day and Norm and Sharon’s engagement. They fixed the meal for Mom to enjoy.
On Friday, May 15 Beverly Winn, Firm and Sue McBeth, and Josie Courtney attended the dance recital of Layken Lee, Sue’s youngest granddaughter, at the Sigourney High School. Her parents are Logan and Faith Lee. After the recital, they all went to the Pizza Ranch for supper, including Grandma Tracey Lee and Brian.
On Saturday, May 16, Beverly Winn, Firm and Susan McBeth, Jamison G. Harbison, Josie Courtney and Dreake and Delaney Harbison (children of Quentin and Kelli Harbison) went to Tulsa, Oklahoma to attend Jamison’s daughter, Reilly Harbison’s graduation. A party was held on Sunday at the home of Janson and Michelle Kreigers in Jenks, Oklahoma. Josie, Drake, and Delaney stayed the three days there with Reilly while Beverly, Firm and Susan, and Jamison stayed at the home of Rick Doolins and friend Dennise. Rick is the son of Leroy Doolin. They all really enjoyed their time with the family.
Beverly and Susan have spent several hours at the Ollie Cemetery trying to get grass to grow on Roger Winn’s plot. A big thank you to Bill and Peggy Winn for the use of the pickup, dirt, and grass seed.
Josie Courtney, Susan’s youngest daughter, celebrated her 22nd birthday at Beverly Winn’s home on May 24.
Ollie Alumni met Saturday, May 23 with 29 present. Kaye Cleavenger came the furthest, from Renton, Washington. He was from the class of 1945. His niece also came from Ames. Frances Fye was from the oldest class there, 1941. Next year they will meet in the Ollie Park at 1 p.m. Everyone will bring snacks and finger food.
Pekin 5, Lone Tree 0 Pekin junior Keaton Winn pitched the perfect game last Monday to lead the Panthers to a 5-0 win over Lone Tree.
Winn struck out 20 batters in the game, while also having a successful night at the plate. He went 2-3 with a double, hitting three runners in and scoring a run.
Cole Reighard was also 2-3 at the plate, with two runs and a double. Ryan Swanson and Joel Swanson were each 1-3 at the plate, with Ryan scoring a run.
A wedding anniversary card shower is planned for William “Bill” and Beverly Boley of Birmingham, who are celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary Monday, June 8.
Beverly Reneker and William Boley were married June 8, 1957, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple returned to visit the Little Brown Church in May 2014.
The Boley’s are currently retired. Mrs. Boley was employed at Fairfield Line for 45 years. Mr. Boley was employed at Barker Company in Keosauqua for 20 years and had his own construction company, which was established in 1962. The couple has two daughters: Debbie Smulders and husband John of California, MO, and Patty Adam and husband Andy of Richland, IA. They have five grandchildren: Bryan Wolford, Melissa Vernon, and Austin, Emily and Eric Adam; three great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
2000
A rededication ceremony was held at Lake Darling to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Lake Darling State Park was dedicated on Sept. 7, 1950 and has been a popular recreational area for campers anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Quite a lot of damage was done to Ollie area homes, vehicles, gardens, and field crops following a terrible hail storm. Piles of hail stones were still visible much later. Many residents couldn’t remember ever being in such a hail storm.
Keith Thomas, son of Lucille Thomas and the late Howard Thomas, announced his retirement after 35 years of teaching instrumental music. Mr. Thomas taught three years in Fremont, one year in Olds, Six years in Mt. Pleasant, two years in Boone, and 22 years in the Parkway School District of suburban St. Louis, Missouri.
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Cooney of Rubio celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Robert Dean Cooney and Joan M. Sheraden were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fairfield. They are the parents of four children, and have seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
1990
George L. Hendrickson has announced the closing of Hendrickson Implement Co. of Richland, thus ending 61 years of continuity with the International Harvester Co., and now Case-IH Co., all here in Richland. His parents Jake and Rubye Hendrickson started the business as a McCormick-Deering dealership in 1929. Earl Horras, who began his career in the farm equipment repairs parts and service division, is completing his 37th year with the parent company in Richland. He will be involved in with the other two Hendrickson companies located in Sigourney and Fairfield as over all parts manager, as well as other areas of management and sales.
The River Lodge north of Brighton was temporarily out of business, due to the Skunk River surrounding the Lodge and over the parking lot. This was only a portion of the damage in the area caused by heavy rains and floods.
Pekin’s 1990 Prom King and Queen are Mark Clark and Jennifer Hammes.
1960
The Chalmers Hoskins Farm Supply is observing its first year completion in the Richland business circle.
Bob Hannah, who recently sold his auto and implement business to Mac Young, plans to move to Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Hannah has purchased a home near downtown Phoenix. He also plans to enter the business field there. Bob has been a member of the Richland business circle for more than fourteen years.
Nine cars of a Milwaukee freight train derailed near Farson. Some of the derailed cars tipped over. They were loaded with corn and machinery. The train was bound for Kansas City, Missouri.
We hear children’s comments about the school meals often … here is a list of a few of the meals offered during this week in 1960: Monday: Mashed potatoes, pork gravy, buttered corn, pickles, bread and butter, pudding, milk; Tuesday: Chili, crackers, celery, peanut butter sandwiches, peach pie, milk; Wednesday: Buttered soup beans, deviled eggs, cheese wedges, cabbage slaw, warm buttered rolls, prunes, milk; Thursday: Roast beef tips, potatoes, Harvard beets, carrots, bread and butter, apples, milk; Friday: Salmon salad sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches, creamed peas and carrots, bean salad, fruit salad, graham crackers, milk.
A group of friends in the Rubio community had a get-together honoring Mr. and Mrs. Paul McClintic and Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Watson who were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversaries.
1930
Mrs. Clarence Frederick opened up the Depot restaurant and will conduct the business in an up-to-date manner.
D.C. Olive took charge of the Standard Oil Filling station, which has been under the management of Wray Hill for several years.
Eight inches of rain is reported to have fallen in the recent downpour. Skunk River overflowed the lowlands damaging many acres of corn. Richland Creek was on a rampage and out over the bottom. It was the heaviest rain we have had for several years. The high water washed quite a hole in the creek in the Simon Williams pasture and the boys in the neighborhood are using it for a swimming hole.
