Demolition of the old Clarion building on the southeast corner of the square is underway. The lot was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hendrickson and donated to the town of Richland as a building site for the new Richland Public Library. Volunteers have been working evenings this week removing window frames, doors, and minor partitions in preparation for the actual razing that will be July 12. It is hoped that an old cornerstone believed to be in the north half of the building will be discovered. The south half of the building was constructed well before the turn of the century and was originally used as a bank. The concrete platform, which later supported the large newspaper printing press, at one time held the bank vault. The north half of the building was added later when the newspaper office was first located there. Old clippings mention a cornerstone-laying, but no photos are known to exist of it.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Richland Public Library will be held July 14 at 7 p.m. at the building site on the southeast corner of the square. Master of Ceremonies will be George Hendrickson, with Mayor Ron Greeson, special guests, and area clergy also taking part.
