1926
Twenty-seven automobiles, seven of them new, burned in a fire that destroyed the Lockridge Motor Company’s garage, the Hickenbottom Barber Shop, and the Calhoun Restaurant at Lockridge. The fire started in the garage and could not be controlled by the firefighting facilities at Lockridge. Three new cars were saved.
A decided decrease in marriages in Keokuk County for 1925, as compared to the year 1924, was revealed by the records of Clerk Glen Redfern’s office. During 1924 there were 114 marriages in the county, whereas during 1925 there were only 87 marriage licenses issued.
The new fire engine has arrived and though at first it was installed on a Ford Roadster chassis it was seen that this would not be heavy enough to carry the engine and equipment, so it was decided to install it on a Ford truck chassis instead. This will give a better opportunity to carry a full equipment of firefighting paraphernalia.
Doris Johnson was visiting her cousin Enid Wonderlich on Saturday. Doris, Enid, and Naomi went sled riding with Helen and Elizabeth Ramsey, and afterward hitched Doris’s pony to their sleds and had a ride.
Elizabeth and Helen Ramsey went to the creek with their father Friday and Helen fell into the creek.
Mr. Guy Brown of the northern part of the state spent a few days recently at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary Brown at Linby. He also visited in Fairfield with John and Walter Harrison.
Mrs. Wiggins and two children spent New Year’s Day at the home of Velma Avery.
Mrs. Joe Hartnell and children spent Saturday evening with Mrs. Guy Black.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Augustine, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hartnell and children spent Thursday evening at the John Augustine home listening to the radio.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Deal and Wendle Pfeifer helped Alois Belter with his butchering Wednesday.
1966
Mr. and Mrs. Orville Paxson of Illinois spent Thursday with Mrs. Ora Paxson. Bernard Lloyd Paxson came from Cedar Rapids Friday to spend the weekend with them.
Mr. and Mrs. Vic Oswalt, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Oswalt, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cobb and children, were guests on New Year’s Day in the Ira Saunders’ home in Brighton.
Miss Marie Snyder went to Iowa City Monday where she expects to have eye surgery soon.
Mrs. Richard Starr came home from Jefferson County Hospital where she had been a medical patient for treatment of pneumonia.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Morgan and four children have moved to the George Hendrickson property east of town which formerly belonged to Roy Seaton.
Howard Adrian entered the Jefferson County hospital last Thursday for major surgery on Friday. He is making a good recovery.
Mrs. J. Howard Jones invited Mr. and Mrs. Vic Oswalt and Mr. and Mrs. Logan Sellars to spend the afternoon of Dec. 30 in honor of Mr. Jones’ birthday.
Mrs. Ben Winfrey returned home after 18 days in the Jefferson County hospital as a medical patient.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dickey, Debbie and Megan, returned home after spending the holidays with her mother, Mrs. Harry Seaman and Mr. Harry Seaman in San Gabriel, California. They also visited her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Rememch in Hollywood. David and Daniel returned earlier in the week.
Mr. and Mrs. Chet Northup announce the engagement of their daughter, Rachel, to Jim Wonderlich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norlan Woodard of Hedrick.
