70 years ago — March, 1953
C.B. McCracken and Andrew George are the only listed candidates for election to the Richland Independent school board in the annual election to be held March 9. Mr. McCracken is now president of the board and will seek a three-year term at the election. Mr. George, a newcomer, is running for membership on the board to replace Kermit S. Oswalt, who is not a candidate. His term is for three years. Voting will be held at the town hall with polls open from noon until 7 p.m. There is expected to be a very light vote s there will be no candidates on the ballet to oppose McCracken or George. Other members of the present board are Bob Allen, john Pendergraft, and Dick Conklin. Gilbert Starr is the treasurer. Fay. B. Shultz serves as secretary of the board.
Dale Sasseen attended the Green Colonial Furnace service school, which was held at the factory in Des Moines last Thursday and Friday.
‘Hob” Thomas has taken over the line of Capehart and Emerson television sets for the Richland community. He has both brands in stock and demonstrations are available at his home in west Richland.
George Hinshaw underwent surgery at University Hospital in Iowa City last Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Talley were in Iowa City recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Marcus McBeth were calling on Mr. and Mrs. Julius Brown Sunday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sellers of Fairfield came by and took Mr. and Mrs. Logan Sellers over to Washington Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Klein and children, Byran, Jack, and Janet, of Fort Madison, spent the weekend at the George Hendrickson home. Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hendrickson were additional dinner guests on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Hoekstra and baby, Pat, spent Sunday afternoon calling on Mrs. Hoekstra’s sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Don Drish at Moline, Illinois.
Carol Horras and Ann Hoekstra were overnight guests Saturday night at LaVern Hoekstra’s.
Julia and Judith McCracken spent Tuesday and Tuesday night with their grandmother, Mrs. Frank Fleig, near Fairfield, while their parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.B. McCracken attended the girls’ tournament in Des Moines.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Greeson and family were Sunday dinner guests at the home of the W.C. Waugh’s at Libertyville. Mrs. Jean Davis, who had spent several weeks at the Waugh home, accompanied the Greeson’s home.
50 years ago — March, 1973
Keith Sasseen, present elementary principal at the Keota School has been hired to serve as superintendent, starting July 1. Keith is a resident of Richland and is married to the former Phyllis Gould. They have two daughters, Michelle and D’an. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sasseen and graduated from Richland High School with the class of 1957 and from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant in 1961. Keith was principal at Farson elementary school and taught some classes in the Pekin Community High School. He then went to Keota as principal.
Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Oswalt, Mrs. Bill Cobb and Angela called Sunday on Mrs. Bertha Saunders at Maplewood Manor.
Mrs. E.R. Bonnett was hostess Wednesday, Feb. 14 to Women’s Club at her home. Mrs. Milford Watson, vice president, conducted the meeting. The hostess read the 24th Psalm. Twelve members responded to roll call. The program was by Mrs. Gene Hoy, on the life of Carl Sandburg.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sasseen and Mrs. Helen Hadley were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Paxson in Mt. Pleasant. They also called in Brighton to see Roy Campbell, who is seriously ill at his home.
Sunday guests for dinner in the home of Mrs. Leonard Kessel were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wonderlich, Barry and Jerry, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Goodman, Criss, Johnny, Joe, and Jackie, Mrs. Richard Ranes, all of Centerville; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Kessel, Cecie, Richard and Chris of Hedrick; Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Kessel, Jill, Jess and Amanda of Ollie, Gary Kessel and Frank Luke. Dinner was in honor of the baptism of the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Kessel.
Russell Bond, Ray Morgan, Richard Bond, Mel Maeder, Jim Archer, and Tommy Hartnell attended the Quaker Men’s banquet in Oskaloosa Saturday evening. Mrs. J. Keith Krewson called on her grandmother and aunt, Mrs. Nell Kent and Mrs. Ruth Reighard.
Mrs. Joe Greiner and infant daughter, Janice Marie, were dismissed Saturday from the Jefferson County Hospital.
