Wednesday, July 4, the sad news was received by relatives here of the drowning that morning in the Chariton River between Albia and Centerville, of Dewey Holmes, a brother to Mrs. J.B. Reed and Mrs. H.H. Bendergraft of Richland. Dewey was well known in this community, having worked in Richland some time ago in the capacity of a lineman for the telephone company. He was well liked and highly respected by all of associates and acquaintances. At the time of his accident occurring he was sitting on the bank of the stream and was seen to fall into the water immediately sinking and not coming to the surface again. The stream, though now large, was swollen from recent rains and every effort to recover the body proved futile until about 9:00 that night.
