Work has been started on a new post office building in Packwood. Located across the street, north, from the Packwood Community Center, the structure is being built by Eddie Wallace, retired Packwood banker, and will be leased to the U.S. Post Office Department. The Fairfield Lumber Co. is the contractor for the project. Mrs. Robert Myers, postmaster at Packwood, said the building will have over 800 square feet of floor space. It will have a customer lobby, work room, and storage facilities with a loading dock at the rear.
Donkey Ball will be coming to Richland on August 3. For the game, the Richland Jaycees have obtained the services of the Nationally known Crosby Donkey Ball Co. of Wisconsin. All local riders will be used for the exhibition and the boys have gone into serious training for the big event. The Richland Jaycees will be opposed by the Richland Merchants, who have announced they will use on first base Galloping Clyde Rapp on John Wayne; second base Brad Young on Tricky Dickie; third base Dancin’ Doc Hoy on Super Stupid; short stop Dangerous Don Fritchen on Mr. Crosby; left field Babe Dick Green on Peanuts; center field Jumpin’ Joe Deutsch on Useless; right field High Sight Dwight Westercamp on Dumb Dumb; pitching Round House Ron Greeson; catcher Dastardly Dick Caughlin; and manager Hustlin’ Joe Jones.
Mrs. Clella Letts of Richland received word Thursday morning of the death of her son, Marion Letts. He was found early Thursday morning shot to death in his large, refrigerated meat truck in the terminal of the Midwest Refrigeration Company in Jersey City, New Jersey. Letts, 28, was employed by the Midwest Refrigeration Company of Omaha and had unloaded, reloaded and was resting before starting out on another run. When his truck hadn’t pulled out of the terminal this morning, it was investigated and the murder was discovered. Letts was born Oct. 16, 1944 to Roger Letts and Clella Coil Letts in Van Buren County.
Richland has a new business in town, Morgan’s Hobby and Sports Shop, located on the square where McClure’s Upholstery Shop was formerly located. The shop carries fishing and sports equipment, and all kinds of crafts to be used to make things. Judy Hayden, who operates the shop, says for the first three weeks her window will be used for displays of articles made by customers who buy supplies from her store of articles.
Three Richland horses won first place at the Wapello Homecoming held last week. They were iron Man owned by Henry Yahn, Karen’s Baby owned by Ray Holmes, and Adios Eric owned by Kermit Hinshaw.
A miscellaneous bridal shower was held Friday evening at the Woolson Friends Church in honor of Mary Hoskins, bride-elect of Tim Dunaway. Approximately 45 ladies attended. Naomi Lock welcomed the guest and gave the devotions. Entertainment consisted of a reading by Mrs. Mabel Pickard, a musical selection by Mrs. Mike McCormick and a reminiscence of “Shoes in the Life of Mary Hoskins” by Mrs. Seth Hoskins, grandmother of Mary. Assisting Mary with her gifts were Mrs. Mike McCormick and Mrs. Mel Maeder, a sister of Mary’s.
