Gas and Goodies in Richland opened its doors on June 6 of this year, but held off on its official opening until September because of the extreme heat this summer, according to owner Sherry Cobb, who owns the business along with her husband, Bill. The couple also own Cobb Oil Co. Inc. of Richland. The grand opening for the combination gas and grocery store was Sept. 23, 1983. Hours for the store are 6-10 seven days a week. Barb Emery is the manager of the store, other employees are Shirley Niece, Jim Rich, and Brenda Deutsch.
John and Joann Fritz were honored at an open house for their 25th wedding anniversary on Sept. 10. The event was held in their home and hosted by their daughter, Sandy, and her fiance, Tony Maldonado. They were assisted by Louise Richards, Roberta Ledger, Darlene Widmer, and Jane Symmonds.
Mr. Dean Edwards, President of the Rubio Savings Bank of Brighton, has announced that construction will start immediately on a new banking facility in Brighton. The new, modern building will provide full-service banking previously not available in Brighton. The Rubio Savings Bank opened in Rubio, Iowa in 1906. In July 1941, the bank moved the charter to Brighton, changed the name to Rubio Savings Bank of Brighton, and opened for business at the present location.
Bob Northup, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Northup of Ollie, is a member of the 1983 Central College football team. He is a senior quarterback and two-time letterwinner.
Angela Jo Cobb graduated from the School of Photography at Hawkeye Technical School in Waterloo the first of June. Following graduation, she worked for her parents in their new quick stop store in Richland. The first of August, Angela and her former roommate each packed their cars and went to Phoenix, Arizona to look for jobs. Within four days Angela accepted a job at a photography store in the Metro Mall in Phoenix.
Carol Neece Meyers, senior nursing student at Northeast Missouri State University at Kirksville, Missouri, was recently chosen president of the 1984 nursing class. There are 46 members in the class. Carol was chosen for this honor by her peers. Carol and her husband, Jeff, are presently residing near Bloomfield, Iowa. Carol is the youngest daughter of Leroy and Elsie Neece of rural Richland.
Mike Abel, a Park Ranger with the Iowa Conservation Commission, has been promoted to the position of Conservation Program Coordinator at the Mines of Spain area in Dubuque. He and his wife, Nancy, will be moving to Dubuque to take up his Oct. 1 appointment. Mike is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Abel of Ollie.
Earlier this month the business community in Richland suffered the loss of the town’s only car dealership, Hadley Chevrolet, located on old highway 77 south of the square. The dealership was owned by Raymond Hadley, who purchased the business in 1963. The business was originally located in the building north of the square that up until recently housed Cannan Fluids. Monna Allen, wife of Bob Allen, stayed on as bookkeeper following the purchase by Hadley. She and her husband originally owned the dealership. In 1974 Hadley moved the dealership to the present location and changed the name from Allen Chevrolet to Hadley Chevrolet. The business provided 24 hour wrecking service, used car sales and service, as well as new car sales and service.
