1923, 100 years ago
On Dec. 20 at Ottumwa, occurred the marriage of Mrs. Morgan to Mr. William Stephens. We have no particulars of the ceremony, only that the couple returned to Richland that evening on the Milwaukee and went to the groom’s apartment at the Oswalt property where they are making their home.
Tuesday evening, Dec. 26, were married, Mrs. Mary Snider and Mr. John Wallerick, both parties are longtime residents of this community. Upon their return to Richland, they were waited upon that evening by a large party of relative and friends. Al McClure was chosen Captain of the hosts and a demand was made for a $50 to defray all expenses of a blowout sublime. On New Year's night, at the Earl McClure home north of town, the feast ws held, and was attended by almost the entire countryside.
On Christmas Day, Rev. O.J. Fix officiated the marriage of Miss Elsie M. Neuhart to Mr. E.M. Stewart. The couple were att3ended by Miss Janie Harris and Mr. Nathaniel S. Burt. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Neuhart of northwest of town and is a charming young lady. The groom is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Stewart of West Point and for some time has been Manager of the Standard Oil Plant at this place. They have rented the Elton cottage in the north part of town.
December 31, 1922, the last day of the year, at the home of the bride, Miss Sarah Ellen Dearman was united in marriage to Mr. James Elmer Martin. Both are young people of Richland.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Talley and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Williard Morrow and family, spent Christmas at the Lloyd Morrow home in Fairfield.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. Dickinson, of Richland, announce the birth of a baby girl, Marcia Kay. She was born Dec. 28, 1947, at the Washington Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wells and sons, and Mrs. Wilda Stephenson, spent Christmas Day at the Ray Kurka home in Fairfield at a co-op dinner and gift exchange.
Mrs. Ralph Neff and son, Emery, spent the holiday in Ottumwa visiting the Corr and Dowger families.
Louis Caughlan is spending the holidays at the Frank Gantz home, and with other relatives here.
Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Cowguill left Saturday from Fairfield for Los Angeles, California to visit their daughter, Margaret Brust and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Greiner entertained with an oyster supper, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Pfeiffer and daughters, Judy and Joan; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Adam; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sheetz and family; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Dunbar and family; and Mr. and Mrs. George Bond. The occasion was in honor of Bernard’s 34th birthday. They enjoyed two tables of six-handed pinochle.
Little Linda Sue Bond has a very sore arm caused by the whooping cough vaccination. It gathered and broke, and she is now getting relief from it.
Helping Mrs. Iza Neece celebrate her birthday last Friday evening at her home was Mr. and Mrs. Harold Neece, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Neece, Miss Gertrude Neece, LeRoy Neece. An oyster stew was enjoyed. Mrs. Neece received 156 cards from her neighbors and friends. She is slowly improving from a long illness.

Ice had its effect on many things last week, but telephone lines and poles seemed to get the worst of it. About three miles of line was out, in the area just south of the Ernest Nelson farm south and west of Packwood. Similar situations were repeated in many, many areas all over southern Iowa.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert L Horras of Richland announce the engagement of their daughter, Linda Kay to Greg Joe Leu, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Leu of Fairfield. Miss Horras is a graduate of Pekin High School and is employed by Jefferson County Hospital.
Dixie Hinshaw spent Christmas vacation in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Hinshaw and her grandmother, Mrs. Loren Hinshaw. Her sister, Jeannie, spent that time with their other grandmother, Mrs. E.J. Emonin in Fairfield.
A special dedication service was held at the Richland Friends Church Sunday morning honoring Darren Eugene Capps, infant son of Reece and Susan Capps.
