Three people were injured in a two-car crash Sunday at the Hopewell Church corner, three miles north of Richland on Highway 77. The Rev. Harley Yates, 60, pastor of the Hopewell Church, had just finished conducting the services there and was leaving for the Church of the Brethren, where he is also pastor. As he attempted to cross the road his car was struck by a car driven by George Armstrong, 63, of Sigourney. Mrs. Yates, a passenger in the care driven by her husband, was thrown from the care. She was taken to the Keokuk County Hospital by a church member, accompanied by Mrs. Delbert Fleig, registered nurse. Mrs. Yates suffered three or four broken ribs and a head injury. Mr. Armstrong was referred to a Sigourney physician and is believed to have broken ribs and possibly a broken nose. Mrs. Vivian Young of Sigourney, a passenger in the Armstrong car, was treated in Richland at the doctor’s office. X-rays revealed she also had broken ribs. Armstrong’s car was badly damaged and the Yates car had a crumpled rear fender.
An Ollie man, Rex Ruggles, 24, was shot and killed Tuesday night about 10:30 in a tavern at Ollie. Admitting the shooting was Norman Caskey, 37, Williamsburg trucker. Keokuk County law officials said that domestic trouble was the reason for the killing. Caskey was arraigned in Sigourney court on the murder charge. Three shots from a nine-millimeter Belgian-made automatic pistol, clip loaded, is alleged to have been used as the murder weapon.
