Contracts are being issued this week to teachers in the Pekin Community School District following approval of salary increases by the board of education. Superintendent James Rood said that the salary schedule approved brings the base salary to $7700.
Three Pekin High School students received first place plaques at Business Achievement on March 30 in Washington. Barb Vogel received a first place in business law, while Cheryl Durflinger finished first in vocabulary. Steve Kerber received first place in both current events and business knowledge. A total of nine Pekin students participated, of which five received plaques. Kerber also received a third-place plaque, as did Craig Hoskins and Megan Dickey.
Dave Eidahl of Richland and Shirley Adam of rural Hedrick, a sophomore at Pekin High School, won state championships in race walking Saturday in Des Moines. Eidahl walked the 20 kilometer in 1.58:20 and Adam walked the five kilometer in 21:12.
Judy Weber was surprised on her birthday, April 4, by Mr. and Mrs. Jim Reed of Keota, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kiefer of Pleasant Plain, and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Reed of Richland. The evening was spent playing cards.
A group of women from the Richland and Rubio area traveled to Ottumwa Saturday to participate in the YWCA volleyball Tournament. The Richland team placed third in the events. The women who played were: Eunice Van Voorst, Jane Blakely, Diane Weber, Ann Snyder, Marcia Sieren, Marjory Focht, Karen Bovaird, Kathleen McCormick, Beverly McCormick, Debby Archer, and Mary Adam.
Four new members have been inducted into the Richland Lions Club. They are Daniel Rodgers, Ted Spray, Richard Fullerton, and Roland Wray.

Ronald Keith Shy of rural Ollie was killed Thursday afternoon when the motorcycle he was operating collided with a tractor about 11 miles west of Washington.
Larry and Karen Morgan entertained at a co-op dinner for their family in honor of their mother, Kathleen Morgan. Those attending were Craig and Sarah Morgan and Dale; Colleen Ulin, Chuck and Byron Kimble; and Kim Morgan. Kelley and Shirley Morgan were home from Cedar Rapids for the occasion. Mick, Robyn and Allison were there from Keota.
Beverly Leathers spent the weekend at Craig Morgan’s and Gilbert Leathers’. Shayne Leathers, who had spent the week with his grandparents, went home with his mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Horras and Sara hosted a family dinner on Sunday. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Phil Shaver and family, Mickey Kerr, Carol Wehr and Lisa Horras, all of Sigourney; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Williams, Kathy and Jimmy, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Horras and Mrs. Lois Williams, all of Ollie.
Wendy Hoskins of Packwood spent the weekend with her aunt and family, Mr. and Mrs. Mel Maeder and family. On Sunday, they and Mr. and Mrs. Chalmer Hoskins went to Memphis, Missouri, where Mr. and Mrs. Tim Dunaway and sons, and Mr. and Mrs. Bub Hoskins joined them for a family dinner.
A piano recital was held April 1 at the Christian Union Church in Hedrick. It was the piano students of Elayne Campbell. Those performing were Carol Allman, Becky Blaylock, Beth Campbell, Katie Conger, Mason Eighmy, Chad Ingle, Bradley Perkins, Beth Rice, Julie Schweiter, and Sarah Tolle.
