Journeying to Iowa City, the Richland High School track team entered the state indoor track meet at the Iowa Field House Saturday, March 24. The Richland team entered with the disadvantage of having to train in the gym instead of outdoors, due to the weather. The mile relay team; which consisted of Bond, Reighard, Nordyke, and Wells; took second in their heat. Dick Bond and Lonzo Wells both took first place in their heat in the 50-yard dash. They both ran it in 5.9. Dick Eklund, who had not had a chance to practice pole vaulting so far this season did a good job and went out at 9 ft.

Senior Interview: Richard Bond is one of very few boys who have excelled in many activities. We are very proud to have someone like this, but it sure hurts when they have to graduate. I am sure Richland High School is going to miss him and we can only hope that someone will be able to help us has much as he has. Richard Lee Bond, known as “Dick,” “Yo-Yo,” or “The Bomb” on Richland’s basketball team, was born March 28, 1934 at Richland. He attended Centennial, a country school, until he reached the eighth grade. On Aug. 29, 1949, Richard entered RHS where he entered every activity possible. Richard was on our football team all four years of high school. He has played various positions in the backfield. He has lettered all four years in football and has been Captain of our team. He has also been on our basketball team for four years. He played forward position this year. He was on the county team for two years. He received Honorable Mention on the all-State basketball selections. He has over an 11-point average for each game this year. In many games he made twenty points. Richard lettered all four years in basketball and was Captain of our team. Richard has also gone out for track all four years. He has lettered the first three years, but since this track season isn’t over yet, we don’t know who will receive awards, but we are sure Dick will be among those that do. Dick was a member of the 440-yard dash, 880-yard run, and the mile relay teams which won five trophies in his sophomore year. He also ran the 100-yard, 220-yard, and the 440-yard dashes which he won and got to go to the state track meet in Ames in his junior year. He received a fifth place in the broad jump and second place in the 50-yard dash at Iowa City this year. Besides athletics, Richard has been very active in music. He has played the trombone in band his freshman, junior, and senior year. He sings bass in our mixed chorus, which he has been a member of his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Richard was a member of the junior class play and is a member of the senior class play. He is a member of the annual staff this year of which he is the sports editor. He has had the position of sports news writer on the Tiger Tempos staff for the last two years. He was president of our class his junior year, vice president his senior year, and president of the band his senior year. Richard said for a hobby he likes to do anything to keep busy. His favorite subjects were algebra, science, and manual training. His favorite sports are football, basketball, and track. For recreation he likes to swim. The most important events in his high school life have been winning the substate tournament and being able to play in the state tournament and running in the state track meet in Ames. Richard’s most embarrassing moment was when he was Toast Master at the junior-senior banquet his junior year and he got up there and didn’t know what he was going to say. His pet peeve is Larry taking the car when he wants it. Dick has not yet decided what he will do after he graduates.
Senior Interview: Charles — King Charles or was it King Edwards? Both kinds seem to fit into Charles Blakely’s name. “Charlie” as he is called by nearly everyone, was born on a farm southeast of Richland in 1935 and has been a farmer ever since. Well, maybe he hasn’t spent all of his 18 years as a farmer, but you can bet most of them have been spent at that occupation. Charlie has lived around Richland all his life. He spent his first eight years of school in Rubio and entered Richland High School in August of 1949. He says he has no hobbies, but if I may express my own opinion, I would say that new Ford of his would be all one could ask for as a hobby. There hasn’t been one year in his high school career that we haven’t seen Charlie in a football suit, and not warming the bench either. He went out for basketball the first three years and track as a sophomore, junior, and senior. He has been a good bass singer in the mixed chorus as a sophomore and junior. He did a wonderful job of acting in our class play. He has been on the paper staff for the last two years and is calendar editor on the annual staff this year. He didn’t put anything down for his most embarrassing moment. His favorite subject is shop and football is his favorite sport. His favorite recreation is going to picture shows. Freshman initiation, junior-senior banquets, and the athletic banquets were the most important events in his high school career. He lettered in track as a sophomore and junior and has received letters in football all four years. He was Co-Captain of the squad the last two years. Farming is Charlie’s future vocation and I am sure he will be good at it. As for some of his favorites: song- “Wheel of Fortune," singer- Kay Starr, movie- “The Stooge," actor- Jerry Lewis, actress- June Allyson, orchestra- Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, food- fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Good luck, Charlie, and we’re glad you spent your four years of high school with us.
