The Richland Homecoming was a big success last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday if the number of out-of-town and out-of-state visitors is any measure. Richland’s population was nearly tripled as 908 visitors registered at the three-day event. Activities started with the invocation by Father Paul C. Wetzstein. Chalmers Hoskins, president of the Richland Commercial Club, gave the welcome and the Rev. Wilson Hyde gave the response. Following was the kids’ parade, with more than 100 entries. First place in the Pet division went to The Johnny Adam Farm with Amy, Patrick and Lori Adam; second place was won by Huck and Tom with Raccoon with Chris and Paul Adam; and third went to Little Girl and Pig by Cynthia McCormick. The Wheels division was won by Just Married Bicycle Built for Two with Laurie and Alan Nordyke; second place went to Peppermint Island with Daniel, Jeff, Nancy and Jason Maeder and Wendy Jo Hoskins; while third was won by Purple and Pink Bicycle with Karla Bond. In the Storybook Characters division, Dennis, Dwayne and Delisa Blakely and Terri Jo and Todd Hartnell won first place with their entry, Mary, Mary, and Miss Muffit; second place went to Snoopy by Todd, Lisa, and Chad Egbert; and third place was won by Three Blind Mice by Greg, Phil, and Pam Ledger. In the kids’ athletic events, Kay Lynch won the girls 8—10-year-old dash, with second going to Teresa Brinning and third to Jane Sloan. In the boys’ division, Brad Swartzwelter was first, Jeff Weber second, and David Hartig third. The 11-12-year-old dash for girls was won by Becky Weber; Lisa McCreery was second; and Cindy Holmes was third. In the boys’ division, Steve Mosinski was first, John Wallace second, and Scott Horras third. The girls’ three-legged race was won by Kelly Morgan and Cindy Holmes, LuAnn Sobaski and Becky Weber were second, and Kay Lynch and Teresa Brinning were third. Doug Horras and Mike Young won the boys’ three-legged race, second went to Harry Bradfield and Tom Wray, and third was Pay Elmore and Jeff Weber. The girls’ sack race was won by Becky Weber with Angela Kerpatrick second and Lu Ann Sobaski third. The boys’ division was divided into two heats: Tom Wray won the first, with Doug Horras second and Mike Niece third. The second heat was won by Steve Mosinski with Mike Young second and Bruce Ulin third.
Little Miss Nikki Eastman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Eastman, was the guest of honor in her parents’ home Monday evening for her first birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Parsons and Mary, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Parsons, Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Evans of Ottumwa, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lock, Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Lock, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lock, and Mr. and Mrs. Tim Parsons. The birthday cake was decorated appropriately for a one-year-old and homemade ice cream were enjoyed after Nikki opened her gifts.
Suanne Adam was among the 379 St. Ambrose College students cited for academic achievement and named to the Dean’s List for the 1974 spring semester. Suanne is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Adam of rural Richland and a 1973 graduate of Pekin Community Schools. She will be a sophomore this fall majoring in elementary education.
Enjoying a Fourth of July cook out at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hartnell and family were Mr. and Mrs. Mel Maeder and family, Mr. and Mrs. Milford Watson and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Oswalt and family of Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Charlies Blakey hosted a coop dinner at their home July 4. Those attending were the Ray Maurer family, the Victor Parcell family, the Ken Lanford family, the Jim Wolcott family, the Cedric Wolcott family, and the Colleen Ulin family.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hadley of Richland are proud to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Dixie, to Jon Hudson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hudson of Cedar Rapids. Miss Hadley is a junior at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. Her fiance is employed by Plaza Standard in Cedar Rapids.
Joy Adam and Richard Jurrens have announced their wedding plans. Miss Adam is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Adam of rural Richland, and Mr. Jurrens is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alrich Brandt of Waterloo. Miss Adam graduated from Northeast Missouri State University with her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in elementary education. She was a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma honor fraternity. She has taught the last four years at Salter Elementary School in Burlington.
Mrs. Nellie Long, formerly of Richland, celebrated her 100th birthday Wednesday at the Washington Care Center where she is a resident. An open house is planned in her honor. A dinner Sunday at the Golden Buckle in Keota also honored her. Guests were more than 40 friends and relatives. She has no children. Attending from Richland were Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Morgan, Mrs. Wilda Tarrence, Mrs. WE Luithly, Mrs. Mary Morgan and Mr. Fay Shultz from Ollie, a nephew and his wife; Mr.and Mrs. James Long, and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Leathers and family.
Denise Long, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Long, is a pneumonia patient at Jefferson County Hospital.
Scott Johnston, eleven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Johnston of Packwood and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Johnston of Packwood and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gott of Ollie, had his foot seriously injured when he caught it in a weed cutter Friday afternoon. He had surgery at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ottumwa and hopes to be able to return home today if there are no complications.
