Pekin cross country teams start their seasons at Oskaloosa when they face both Oskaloosa and Eddyville in a triangular meet. Both boys’ and girls’ teams will run one mile. The Pantherettes have lost last year’s four top runners, but coach Davis Eidahl feels they will be better than last year’s squad with better depth and better times. Seniors on the Panther squad are Bill Salterberg, Larry Sutton, Dan Cary, Mark Kurtz, and Doug Weber. Juniors are Brent Underwood and Greg Kruzen; sophomores are David Snyder, Kirk Mourer and Jeff Wolcott; and freshmen are Terry Heniger, Terry McCready, Marty Hersh, Don Underwood, Bob Smith, and Curt Cowguill. Pantherette seniors are Karen Snow, Cheryl Yeager, Judy Caviness, and Vicky Clark. Juniors include Marti Stober, Linda Salterberg, Kathy Chambers, Linda Day, Caralee Fritchen, Cathy Dickey, and Shirley Adam. Sophomores are Theresa Luttenegger, Barbara Scearcy, and Joann Kurtz; and freshmen are Kay Wolf Cindy Durflinger, Tina Vittetoe, Evelyn Elmore, and Kathie Sterling.
Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hendrickson have purchased the former Clarion building and lot on the southeast corner of the square to be donated as a building site for a new public library in Richland. Originally used as a bank, the building for many years housed the office of the Richland Clarion. Since the sale of the Clarion last December, it has been used as a job printing shop by the Kelly Printing Co. The location is considered ideal by the town council and the library steering committee.
