Seven Pekin softball players were named to the Southeast Iowa Super Conference softball teams. Named to the SEISC North Division first team from Pekin was Madelyn Baker. Named to the second team from Pekin were Ashlyn Zook, Tiana Slaney, Sloan Reighard, and Nikole Arendt. Receiving honorable mention from Pekin were Cassidy Tolle and Kaylee Linder.
After getting wins in the first two rounds of district play, Pekin’s baseball season came to an end in the final game of Class 1A District 11 against North Mahaska. The Panthers, who were on a 14-game winning streak, were only able to get three hits in the 5-0 loss Saturday night. Cole Reighard went 1-3 at the plate with a double. Seniors Kolby Allsup and Cade Millikin each had singles for the Panthers.
In the first round game last Tuesday night, Pekin beat Sigourney 1-0. The Panthers came away from the game with only two hits, both by Cade Millikin. He finished 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Petie Clubb scored Pekin’s only run in the sixth inning. Senior Zach Sloan pitched seven innings, earning a shutout. He allowed only three hits while striking out nine. On Thursday, Pekin hosted IMS for round two of district ball. The Panthers got a 2-1 win, scoring on an error and an IMS balk. Keaton Winn was 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Ryan Swanson, Kolby Allsup, and Trevor Northup each had a base hit.
The Panthers end their season 20-5.
Jason and Terri Hartnell Nicholls and family of Southbend, Indiana were home for the homecoming weekend. Todd Hartnell also was home to see his parents Jerry and Konnie Hartnell.
Denise and Rachel Wildemuth of Davenport were recent visitors of Donnie and JoAnn Long.
Janae and Sean Johnson of San Diego visited Janae’s father Ed Green last week. They also visited Bill and Sue Gill.
Allie Gill spent last weekend with Bill and Sue Gill before spending the rest of the week in Knoxville with Blaine and Amber Gill.
Dave and Dawn Messenger and their daughter Jolene and Doug Erdman with Blade, Dagger, and Daringer, all of Brighton, took a trip to Topeka, Kansas to celebrate July 4. They left on July 3 and returned July 6. They visited Dave’s sisters Betty and Shirley. They also visited with Betty’s family: Kirk, Tammie, Hana and Brandon, Jerry, and Christine and family. Shirley’s daughter Annette also joined them. They all had a good time being together. They enjoyed visiting, cookouts, and fireworks.
Providing the evening meal of July 13 at the Winifred Fritz home were her daughter and family. They included Mary and Joel Boatright with Bridget Hollingsworth, all of Fairfield; and J.D. Hollingsworth of Packwood with fiance Becky of Fairfield.
Charlene Triska with John and Lyle left July 1 for Mount Pleasant. They visited her brothers Danny and Cindy Triska and family, and Ronald Triska. They enjoyed helping with the paper route, fishing, dining out, shopping, visiting, and spending time at the park. They returned home July 14.
Winners of some of the events at the Richland Homecoming have been announced. Bobbi (Hanna) Ley of Arizona was the winner of the 50/50. Kim Kennelly of Richland won the Women’s Club Quilt Raffle. In the parade, the best overall float was the Rubio Community float. Best use of theme was the Class of ‘64; Cavner/Hoy Construction won in the Clubs, Churches, Commercial; the Ritchie family won in Horses/Animals; in the open category, Junior Snyder won with his tractor and spreader, and Bill Gill won with his car. Advancing to the State Fair from the Bill Riley Talent Show are Sophie Beenken of Mount Pleasant in the sprouts, and Madisen Nielson and Jami TeBockhorst of Washington in the seniors. Joe and D.J. Hadley were the winners of the Gong Show. Luke the Magician was second, and Deanna Baker placed third. Placing in the chocolate chip cookie contest was Katie Balster, first place; Patty Adam, second; Pam Hadley, third; Lisa Dohlma fourth, and Hollie Loper fifth. Joe Noe was the overall Barbecue winner. In the water fight, Mitch Ehrenfeltd and Derek Sobaski was the winning firemen pair; and Mike Hadley, Darren Wiggens, and Aaron Ledger was the winning adult group. Names of the winning kids were Lathyn Weaver, Owen Donovan, and Ted Criswell. In the pedal pull, the top three winners in each age group were:
Three-year-olds: 1st Ethan Capps; 2nd Hunter Stevens; 3rd Isaiah Hadley. Four-year-olds: 1st Easton Roe; 2nd Breanna Stewart; 3rd Cowen Weaver. Five-year-olds: 1st Jaxson Marrs. Six-year-olds: 1st Max Pickering; 2nd Gavin Capps; 3rd Brogan Spray.
Seven-year-olds: 1st Jayden Thompson; 2nd Tatem Telfer. Eight-year-olds: 1st Antonio Manning; 2nd Isaac Wardlow; 3rd Caleb Dailey.
Nine-year-olds: 1st Kylie Bohrn; 2nd Sabrina Martin; 3rd Nevaeh Giberson. Ten-year-olds: Katie Wardlow; 2nd Colton Bishop; 3rd Rachel Wildemoth. Eleven-year-olds: 1st Sky Webber; 2nd Rebecca McSparen; 3rd Kelsie Bohrn.
The 4-H and FFA Ag Olympics were held on July 17 at the Keokuk County Expo Raceway Track. Before the Olympics began, Vision Ag and Farmer’s Co-op of Keota sponsored the Barbeque supper for all 4-H and FFA members, parents, and leaders.
Teams were divided into two divisions for the chance to win Champion Ag Olympics T-shirts which were sponsored by Benny’s Feed. The teams had to challenge an obstacle course which included hay bale crawl, egg smashing, tire rolling, water slip n slide, and the wading pool jump. The 2014 Ag Olympic Junior Champions are Cheyenne Conrad, Isabella Fisher, Bryson Grove, Clayton Moore, and Braydon Fisher from Liberty Leaders 4-H. 2014 Ag Olympic Senior Champions are Hunter Swearingen, Joel Swanson, Ryan Millikin, and Shae Oostra from Patriotic Panthers 4-H Club. Also added this year was the FFA Expo Intimidator Tractor Pull challenge. Teams participated from Tri-County, English Valleys, and Sigourney FFA. The 2014 winning team was English Valleys FFA, pullers were Kellan Coppinger, Adam Grove, and Peter Conrad.
