Brett and Jennifer Sargeant of Brighton are the proud parents of a daughter, Aubree Lynn Nichole Sargeant was born Thursday, July 17, 2014. She weighed seven pounds, two ounces. Aubree was welcomed home by her five-year-old brother Braiden Bowman, and her two-year-old sister A’aliyah Sargeant. Grandparents are Laurie Roach of Brighton, Debra Carter and Robert Carter of Illinois.
John and Valerie Gould spent two days in Richland before driving their motor home back to California.
Bonnie and Jerry Adrian got to take care of their granddaughter Grace over the Labor Day weekend.
Janet Gill Gilbert and friend Michael spent two days visiting Mary Steen and family over Labor Day.
Jr and Ann Snyder, Tom Hoekstra, Renee and Rachel Pfeifer attended the Hoekstra reunion August 31. Pat and Sandy Hoekstra hosted the event.
Bill Gill, Blaine, Amber, and Allie Gill went to Indiana to Shane and Tara Gill’s home Labor Day weekend. They all enjoyed the time with the Gill family, especially time with Penelope Gill. Bill, Blaine, Shane went to the Indianapolis Dragway on Saturday while the women stayed home. Sue Gill wasn’t able to go since she had recently had surgery. Sue was able to travel with Ed Green to Eldon for the Green reunion on August 31.
Kaylee Peiffer of Packwood, and a student at Pekin Elementary School, was the first place winner in the Division 3 (4th to 6th grade) 2014 Regional Soil Conservation Poster Contest sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Iowa Association of Soil Conservation District Commissioners, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company and Keokuk Co. Soil and Water Conservation District. Kaylee received a $35.00 cash award and certificate for the first place entry in Division 3.
A surprise birthday dinner party was held for Tony Fritz on the evening of August 31. Forty-two friends and relatives gathered at the home of Winifred Fritz in Brighton. The guests arrived from North Liberty, Kalona, Fairfield, Nevada, Sigourney, Brighton, Iowa City, Missouri, and Nebraska.
Kathy Babberl of Chariton was an overnight guest of her sister, Pat Remington on August 31. They enjoyed dining at the Pizza Ranch in Washington and the Riverside Casino.
Ginny Brinton attended a memorial service for her sister-in-law, Wanda Brinton, who passed away a year ago. It was held Aug. 29 at the First Methodist Church in Iowa City.
Tim and Rita Berry with Megan of Bates City, Missouri visited her mother, Winifred Fritz. They arrived on August 30. Her brothers Joe Fritz with Julia and Sophia, and Tony Fritz, all of Brighton, with friend Lynn of North Liberty came to Winifred’s to bid them goodbye before their return trip to Missouri on September 1.
The Panthers faced Sigourney-Keota in the annual Backyard Brawl last Friday night. Unlike their past matchups, this wasn’t a close game, with Pekin winning 45-14. Pekin got the jump on the game right from the beginning, picking off Sigourney on the first drive of the game and turning into a touchdown six plays later with quarterback Trevor Northup running the ball in. In the second quarter, Christian Wittrock put Pekin up 12-0 with a touchdown pass before Northup ran it in again for the third Panther touchdown of the game. Seconds away from halftime, Tanner Adam crossed the line for Pekin, giving them a 24-0 lead at the half. The Cobras got on the board with a touchdown in the third quarter but the Panthers answered with another Wittrock touchdown late in the quarter. Sigourney-Keota got their second touchdown of the game at the beginning of the fourth, but later in the quarter, Pekin senior Cole Reighard ran an interception in for a touchdown to seal the game. Other stats include Tanner Adam finishing the game with 132 rushing yards and two touchdowns and Chase Copeland having 120 yards in 19 carries and one touchdown. Northup was three-for-eight for 143 yards passing, with 60 of them on a touchdown pass to Wittrock, and the other two going to Keaton Winn. Northup also ran the ball in for two touchdowns.
The Pekin cross country teams opened their season at Wildwood Park in Ottumwa last Thursday. They came away with three team titles and three first place finishes. Overall, between the junior high and high school teams, Pekin had 12 runners finish in the top ten in their races.
The high school boys were led by Ryan Millikin and Austin Fariss, who finished their race side-by-side in first and second place, both with a time of 17:22. Also placing in the top ten for the boys was Malcolm Myers in fifth with a time of 18:16.
Gwynne Wright is starting the new season where she left off last year, placing first for the high school girls in 16:01. Joining her in the top ten were Taylor Lock in fifth in 17:06 and Shea Dahlstrom in eighth in 17:28.
The junior high teams did well also, with Colton Glosser winning the boys’ race in a time of 12:52. Tony Deutschle finished tenth in 14:11.
Pekin’s middle school girls’ team had four finish in the top ten. Remi Duwa placed second in 14:20, while Hollie Loper was right behind her taking third in 14:22. Hunter Lock and Zoey Wright finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 14:41 and 14:51.
