The executive board of the Southeast Multi-County Solid Waste Agency (SEMCO) signed a 10-year lease for land near Richland in Keokuk County that is designated as a landfill site for the four-county agency. The 71-acre tract is located about a mile west of Richland on Hwy. 78. It is owned jointly by Mrs. Frank Pool and Mrs. Russell Bond. According to the lease arrangement, SEMCO will hold a 10-year lease renewable clause. The owners are to receive $174 per acre annually for the land being used as a landfill and $10 per acre for the balance of the tract. Officials say about 10 acres a year will be used as a landfill. SEMCO is the combined efforts of Washington, Jefferson, Keokuk, and Van Buren Counties to meet state and federal standards on solid waste disposal.
Dr. Bill B. Morgan, member of the ship performance department of the Naval Ship Research and Development Center, has received the David W. Tayor Award for Scientific Achievement in recognition of his contributions to the marine propulsion field. Dr. Morgan, a 1945 Richland High School graduate is the son of Mrs. Mary Morgan of Richland.
Special recognition for their ability as corn growers will be given to four farmers from this area by The Producers of Funk’s G-Hybrids. Their documented 2974 yields were recorded in the Funk’s G Project: 200 national high-yield corn growing contest. The award-winning corn growers and their yields are Arvin W. Reynolds, Ollie, 160.8 bushels per acre; Jay C. Schreiner, Ollie, 152.9 bushels per acre; Bill G. Wonderlich, Ollie, 137.8 bushels per acre; and Sam Horras, Ollie, 139.5 bushels per acre.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Blakely will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on January 12 with an open house at the Richland Lions Building. This will be a courtesy of their son Charles and family. Herbert Blakely and Ethel McLin were married at Fairfield on January 17, 1925. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Fay Shultz. They are the parents of one son, Charles, and have three grandchildren, Dennis, Dwayne and Delisa.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Long and family had as their guests for the Long Christmas supper Saturday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Long and family and Ken’s fiancée of Geneseo, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hadley, Mr. and Mrs. Jon Hudson of Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Archer and family of Agency, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Long of Washington, Mrs. Rachel Long, Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Long and family of Brighton, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Long of Kirksville, Missouri, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Frye and family of New Boston, Illinois, and Marsha Long of Washington were unable to attend. A Christmas gift exchange was held alter in the evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Hinshaw, Dennis and Jeannie, and Mr. and Mrs. John Emonin and Lorraine, were Sunday dinner guests in the home of Mrs. Loren Hinshaw.
January 1985
The Richland Commercial Club sponsored a Christmas lighting contest. Prizes, which are dinner for two at the Office were sponsored by The Union Bank and Trust Co. of Richland, were awarded in both Commercial and Residential categories. The judges were Cindy Tarrence of Keota, Joanne Sterling of Farson, Mark Schafer of Fairfield, and Susan Schafer of Fairfield. The Virgil Curtis family won the Residential with the Davis Eidahl family receiving honorable mention. The Magic Mirror Beauty Salon won the Commercial contest.
