2015
Samantha Jamison, WMU senior, was recognized by Gov. Terry Branstad for outstanding academic achievement at the Thirteenth Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony April 26 in Des Moines.
Grace Edwards, a senior at WMU, has been awarded an IT Leadership Forum Technology Scholarship.
2005
Joel Martenson was recognized by Gov. Tom Vilsack for outstanding academic achievement at the Third Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony April 24 in Des Moines.
Several WMU students were honored at the State Invention Convention on April 30. Cole Benson and Brendt Fetzer, sixth-graders with their invention “Double Deck Shoe Rack,” and Janessa Kongable, fifth-grader with her invention “Tonsil Take Out Tote.”
Marjorie Carden celebrated her 90th birthday on May 18, 2005.
2000
On May 7, 2000, the Open Bible congregation and guests celebrated the completion of the expansion and remodeling with a special morning dedication service.
Lindsey Loyd, daughter of Keith and Sue Loyd, has been selected as a member of the 2000 Iowa State Jazz Band.
1995
The Winfield Beautification Committee planted 71 trees in their Spring Tree Planting project.
Eric Rawson was selected for one of the 10 spots on the Iowa Select AAU 19-and-under boys’ basketball team.
Benjamin Michael Fear was born April 29, 1995 to Alan and Missy Fear of Winfield.
1990
Competing at the Class IA State Girls’ Track Meet in Des Moines from WMU were Stephanie Nordyke, discus; Brandi Byrum, 100-yard dash; and Tonya Hardy, Shari Carden, Lisa Larson, and Brandi Byrum, running the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
1985
Mrs. Doraine Lauer retired from teaching after 36 years. She is one of the few remaining original teachers from the time with Winfield and Mt. Union consolidated.
The Winfield Fire Department answered a call shortly after 10:00 on May 6 at Tekland Standard Diets Plant on Hwy 78 West. A small fire was touched off by a torch which was being used to cut a bearing off a shaft at the top of the elevator complex.
Melvin Kim Wolfe, 38, of Morning Sun, died April 29 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Wolfe was overcome some 16 days earlier by sewer gas while trying to rescue co-workers, Terry Parkhurst and Donald Crow, who died from the accident.
1975
A two-story frame house on Hwy 218, a mile and half north of Olds, owned by Tom Miller and rented by Jack Woodson, was gutted by fire. No one was home at the time of the fire.
Mrs. John Cole of Winfield was the winner of the electric range in the grand opening of the new location of the Iowa Southern Utilities Office in Winfield. There was also a drawing for a charcoal grill, which was won by Mrs. Wm Carden of Winfield.
