Out of Winfield’s Past

50 years ago — May 24, 1973
John Kelley took his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Kelley to Chicago, Illinois, Sunday for the funeral of James Kelley’s sister, Mrs. Kathryn Ford. Mrs. Ford passed away unexpectedly early Friday morning. Services were held Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kobs visited Thursday and Friday, a week ago, with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph O’Neill and family at Marion. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kobs and family visited Saturday evening at the parental Edward Kobs home.
A few old friends and neighbors met at Maude Evan’s Thursday to help her celebrate her 91st birthday. Those present were Janet North, Mary Metzger, Ossie Marshall, and Calla Jones. Midafternoon Janet’s daughter Mrs. Helen Rodgers came with a potted chrysanthemum for each mother present. She also had a treasured memory she told of each of us that happened “way back when.” Polaroid pictures were taken. Other visitors were Maude’s niece Evelyn Finke of Columbus Junction and Mrs. Alta Eilers, 83, who drove up from Burlington. It was a happy occasion!
Mr. and Mrs. John Genkinger, Winfield, chose the name Genelle Catherine for their seven lb., 10 oz. daughter born Monday, May 14, 1973. The baby has one brother. Mrs. Genkinger is the former Claudia Weston. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Weston, Lockridge, and Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Genkinger, Fairfield. Mrs. Pearl Parcell, Washington, is the baby’s great-grandmother.

Jeremie and Tina Hinkle, 405 S. Maple #304, Winfield, are the parents of a baby boy, Tylar James, born May 9, 1998. He weighed eight lbs., three oz. Grandparents include Ed Hinkle and Deb Briggs, Winfield, and Larry and Connie Casteel, Mt. Pleasant.
The Mayne Courters have been on a camping trip to the West Coast. They visited the Muir Woods north of San Francisco and traveled the coastal roads through northern California Oregon, and Washington to the Olympic National Park and the Hoh and Queets Rain Forests. They were not able to visit Mt. Rainier or Mt. St. Helens because of snow in the regions. They visited Mary Gallagher at Cheyenne, WY, Jane Courter, Damon and Lara at Bend, OR, Bill Courter at Boise, ID, and Richard Courter at Salina, KS.
Phil and Norma Marshall, Altus, OK, came to Winfield for a few days to visit this past weekend at the parental Phil Marshall and Raymond Long homes. They came to attend the Alumni banquet and activities of the 40 year graduating class of Winfield High School.

Wanda Linder, of Winfield, will celebrate her 90th birthday at an open house from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 9 at the Winfield Veterans Building. Her family invites all friends and relatives to attend.
