50 years ago — June 7, 1973
Rev. Charles Sommers has accepted an appointment as an intern chaplain at St. Luke’s Hospital, a Methodist related hospital at Cedar Rapids, effective the first of September. He has served the Winfield United Methodist Church for five years last March. At St. Luke’s he will join three other interns who will be directed by Chaplain Russell Striffler, who for over 20 eyars was head chaplain at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Mrs. Nellie Schmidt has just returned from a trip to Missouri and Illinois which she started May 6. She visited a sister-in-law, Mrs. H.M. Butler, at Hammond, Missouri. She surprised two sisters on their birthdays: Grace Young, 73, at Fairfield, Illinois, and Maude Whalen, 82, at Bluford, Illinois. She also visited her brother Walker Butler at Watson, Illinois, and her sister Gladys Young at St. Elmo, Illinois. She got back intime to be with her son and wife, Harold and Patty Rose at West Burlington in their 23rd wedding anniversary.
Cheryl Sommer Fye will graduate Sunday, June 10 from Burlington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Cheryl is married to Mike Fye. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everette Sommer of Crawfordsville and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shannon Lantz of Winfield.
Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Bray, Winfield, will be honored in recognition of their 50th wedding anniversary, Sunday, June 17 with an open house from 2-4 p.m. in the parlors of the United Methodist Church, Winfield. Edwin D. Bray and Bessie E. Simkins were married May 5, 1923 at the home of the bride’s parents in Mason City, Iowa. Rev. E.C. Tomerlin, pastor of the Church of Christ officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Bray are the parents of two children: son, David Duane Bray of Indianapolis, Indiana, and daughter, Mrs. Beverly Ann Hash, Lompoc, California, and four grandchildren. The Children and grandchildren are hosting the open house and invite all friend and relatives.

Bob and Marlene Erickson spent the weekend at the home of his mother, Dorothy Erickson Foster.
Gail Chrisinger spent several days at the home of her son and wife, Lance and Donna Chrisinger and family of Beaver Creek, Ohio. She went to attend the graduation of her granddaughter, Sarah. There were 573 young people in the graduating class.
Bob and Ruth Briggs and Donnie and Beth Briggs drove to the Keith Briggs’ home in Grinnell Sunday, May 31 and attended the graduation exercises for Ransom Briggs. There was a reception following the ceremony at the Keith Briggs home.
Phil and Shasta Marshall, Helen Gerling, Shirley Hatton, and Wilbur and Arlene Swan attended the Senior Olympics at Burlington Thursday and Friday.
Mary Remick spent Sunday and Monday at the home of her daughter Linda Kerr. They spent Monday shopping.
Helen Metzger and Evelyn Pounds attended a birthday party at Bug Muddy’s at Burlington for Loraine Slattery. She was in the same class in nurses training as Helen and Evelyn.
Sunday, May 31, Helen Metzger, Verlee Commop and Evelyn Pounds attended an open house at the Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant held in honor of Frances Asher’s 95th birthday.
Ron Lauderdale, West Sacramento, California, is in Winfield visiting his parents, Winnie and Hollis Lauderdale. On Sunday, May 31, they traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to attend graduation ceremonies for their grandson and nephew, Matthew Tieman. Matthew is the son of Mary Lauderdale-Sens.
