1998
•Melissa Lynne Brace and Jeff Alan Gipple, both of Winfield, announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. The bride is the daughter of Terry Brace of Winfield and Bill Brace of Waterloo. The groom is the son of Kevin and Neta Fowler of Columbus Junction and the late Burton Gipple The ceremony will be held on July 11.
•Former area teacher Mabel L. Sandeen, 80, rural Winfield, died June 28, 1998 at Burlington Medical Center.
•Former longtime area teacher and an Iowa Social Studies Teacher of the Year, Elsie Ann Asby, 60, Winfield, died June 21, 1998, at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
•Storms caused over $30,000 in damages in a two-vehicle accident south of Washington. The accident occurred when a 1989 WGMC semi, driven by John c. Whitacre, 53, Brighton, was on Highway 1 South about four miles south of Washington when powerful winds knocked the vehicle over on its side. After that, the truck was hit by a 1993 Plymouth minivan driven by Sharon L. Robison, 33, of Winfield.
•Jay Miller and Vince Klopfenstein provided key plays Tuesday as Winfield-Mt. Union swept Highland, 5-1 and 5-4, in SEI Superconference North Division baseball action. The Wolves improve to 7-4 overall and -3-3 in the division.
2003
•A Winfield teen learned the hard way that not having your bicycle in proper working condition can be very dangerous. Jayson Calvin, 16, was riding his bicycle across the intersection of Walnut and 130th Street in Winfield, he failed to stop at the stop sign and ran into a pickup truck owned by Wendell Helphrey and operated by Kurt Helphrey, both of Winfield. Jayson was taken to Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant, by ambulance where he was treated and released. He is the son of Rick and sue Calvin, Winfield.
•New VFW Auxiliary officers are Margaret Kaut, president; Virginia Mason, sr. vice president; Frances Schwartz, secretary; Martha Carlson, treasurer; Wanda Linder, conductress; Evelyn Pounds, chaplain; Wanda Linder, trustee; Virginia Mason, historian; Frances Schwartz, patriotic instructor.
•Torey Olson was named to the Luther College dean’s list. Kinsey E. Olson was named to the dean’s list at Augustana. Erin Suter was named to the Wartburg dean’s list. Maranda Connop and Taren Miller were named to the dean’s list at the University of Northern Iowa. Sean M. Honts and Faith Danielle Nichols were named to the University of Iowa dean’s list.
•Courtney C. Everett graduated Summa Cum Laude from Iowa Wesleyan with a bachelor’s degree in English. Chris Newton graduated from Kirkwood Community College in agriculture business/associate of applied science.
2008
•Alexa Frier of Washington and Travor Kongable of Winfield announce their engagement and approaching marriage. Parents of the bride-elect or Dr. Curt and Pamela Frier of Washington. Parents of the bridegroom-elect are Randy and Linda Kongable of Winfield.
•Dr. Billy Nordyke and wife, Georgette, of Winfield, are pleased to announce the engagement of their son, Dr. Billy Nordyke Jr. to Dr. Amy DeRosa, daughter of Larry and Margie Lambert of Delran, New Jersey. Amy is also the daughter of Peg DeRosa of Delran and the late Frank DeRosa.
•Schmidt Construction Company, Inc. of Winfield, was awarded the $427,709 contract to remove and reconstruct a bridge over the south fork of Long Creek on Underwood Avenue south of Ainsworth.
•Kelsey Hand received the Michael and Janice Gould Endowment for the Area of the Greatest Need Scholarship from Kirkwood Community College. Hand is a 2007 graduate of Winfield-Mt. Union. She is the daughter of Jackie Hand.
•Progress Club met Monday, June 23, for breakfast at Sassy’s Café. All members and one guest were present.
2013
•Everette Sommer of Winfield will celebrate his 90th birthday on July 7. He will celebrate with an open house Saturday, July 13, at the Crawfordsville Fire Station.
•The Winfield Public Library will have a special program on Friday, June 28. This free program will feature Master Gardener Kathy Buxton.
•Gabe Wylder has been appointed to fill the vacancy of Winfield-Mt. Union elementary principal when school resumes this fall.
•The descendants of the Clarence and Nina Lowe family held a reunion in the Fellowship Hall at the United Church of Crawfordsville on Sunday, June 9, 2013 with the fletcher family as hosts.
•Sarah Chaney and Breanne Smith, both of Winfield, have been named to the dean’s list at St. Ambrose University.
