1998
•Army Pfc. Shawn B. Steward has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal. This is awarded to soldiers who have served in any capacity in a noncombat area authorized by the Secretary of the Army. Steward is a grenadier with the 75th Ranger Regiment as Fort Benning, Columbus, GA. He is the son of Gary W. Steward of Winfield and Susan J. Boline, Morning Sun.
•Darrel and Sue Rawhauser, Riceville, were overnight guests of Cecil Linder’s on July 5. Raymond and Sandy Wickham, Franklin, Indiana, and Sharon Rawhauser Blaser of Norfolk, Nebraska, were visitors in the Linder home. All were in the area to attend the funeral of Ralph Wickham.
•Ralph Wickham received third degree burns from his waist to his toes from a flash fire at his rural Mt. Pleasant home on June 24. He died at University Hospital, Iowa City, on July 3 from complications.
•Mildred Linder came home Wednesday, July 8 from Mercy Hospital after falling and breaking the bone just below the ball of her hip. Her daughter, Janice, came on Tuesday, July 7 to spend two weeks with her mother.
•Florence Watson had the misfortune of falling in the parking lot at the Sirloin Stockade breaking her leg in two places. She is in Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
2003
•Margaret, Violet and Mike Perrenoud, and Sharon and Tim Chaplin, returned home Saturday night from a trip to Boynton Beach, Florida. The girls saw and visited with cousins they had not seen since teenagers.
•Winfield-Mt. Union sophomore Blake Wixom set another school record Saturday in the game against Highland. Wixom hit his 15 double during the game, breaking the old mark of 14.
•The Winfield-Mt. Union Board of Education will meet in joint session with New London Board on July 21. Future sharing arrangements and the superintendent evaluation will be discussed.
•The Winfield-Mt. Union baseball team saw their season end early with a surprising 8-4 loss to Danville. Blake Wixom slammed a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to stake the Wolves to a 2-0 lead.
•On July 25 there will be a wrestling meeting to discuss the current and future direction of the Winfield-Mt. Union wrestling program.
•Two bicyclists, on their way across Iowa to Join RAGBRAI, found their way into Winfield midafternoon Monday in search of food, only to find they were too late for tenderloins and too early for pizza.
2008
•Roger N. Aronhalt, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, July 4, 2008.
• WMU was well represented at the Henry County Relay for Life as “Team Theresa” once again took to the track in memory of longtime WMU teacher, Theresa Woline.
•On July 11, 2008 at 10:19 a.m. the Henry County Sheriff’s office was advised of vandalism to a sign on the south side of Winfield that is owned by the Winfield Open Bible Church. Graffiti had been painted on the sign overnight.
•On Saturday, July 12, Cozy Cozine of Winfield won the WABDL Midwest Regional Bench Press competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
•Matthew Thurman is among the students named to the Spring 2008 semester dean’s list at the University of Northern Iowa.
2013
•Dana Remick and Marcus Loyd, both of Wapello, are engaged to be married. Dana is the daughter of Craig and Linda Remick of Mt. Union and Jon and Jelen McCall of Mt. Pleasant. Marcus is the son of Keith and Susan Loyd of Winfield. The wedding is planned for Sept. 28, 2013 at the Presbyterian Church in New London.
•Spring Run Church, rural Winfield, will host its annual ice cream social on Tuesday, August 6.
•The Winfield-Mt. Union softball team took home a victory July 8, as they defeated Danville 18-8 in a five-inning regional game. Sam Jamison was 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Kayla Coberly and Taylor Rodgers each had three hits, while Paige Breon and Darby Harris recorded two hits each.
•The Winfield-Mt. Union baseball team had 12 hits but took a 15-10 loss to the Central Lee team on July 8. Matthew Neibuhr led the team, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs. Jacob Arnold was 2-for-3 with a double and a run knocked in, and Kolt Rossiter was also 4-for-3.
•Graduating from Iowa Wesleyan College from Winfield were Jacqueline Jennings, Human Services, and David Smith, Physical Education.
