80 years ago — March 4, 1943
Fred Klopfenstein and Arthur Johnson are the only candidates in the school election Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kirkpatrick entertained at dinner Monday evening in honor of Gene Shaver, who left Tuesday to enter military service. Shaver has been employed as bookkeeper at the Cudahy Packing Company since last August. Those present were Gene Shaver and his brother, John, of Rushville, Illinois, Mrs. Helen Pepper and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Marshall.
Mrs. Edwin Cling and children of Mediapolis visited her mother, Mrs. Mathilda Bloom Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Long are parents of a son, born Sunday evening. The lad has been named Gary Raymond. The Longs recently moved to the Elven Palm farm southwest of Winfield.
A potluck supper was held Saturday night at the Raymond Cummings home complimentary to Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Ross and Evelyn, who are moving soon to a farm a mile and a half from Mount Pleasant which they recently purchased. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ping, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Meeker and Lois, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cornic and Beverly, Mr. and Mrs. Ross and Evelyn, Helen Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Grim and Elva, Mr. and Mrs. Cummings, Betty Lea and Keith, and Ed Cummings.
The Home Guards met Feb. 25 at the home of Mrs. Gail Mathews for election of officers as follows: Kathleen Doyle, President; Barbara Van Vranken, Vice President; Marilyn Mathews, Secretary. Gladys Lonsdale gave the devotion, Barbara Van Vranken, Gladys Lonsdale and Marilyn Mathews gave the program. Refreshments were served by Patricia and Betty Perrenoud.
Marilyn Rae Riler, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Riley of Mount Pleasant, is spending a few days with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tep Riley near Crawfordsville.
60 years ago — March 7, 1963
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Reinhard, Jr. of Macomb, Illinois visited over the weekend at the Carl Wiley home. David Reinhard, who had been visiting at the Wiley home, accompanied his parents home Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Spaethe of Manchester were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Allen.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Lee were Sunday dinner guests at the Harold Lee home at Muscatine.
Lee PLeak, Harris Gipple, John Humphreys and Larry Rodruck returned home Saturday night from a vacation trip to Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Underwood and sons were dinner guests at the Richard Underwood home last Thursday.
Fred Widmer returned last Thursday to Aledo Illinois where he attends Roosevelt Military Academy.
Mrs. Nellie Fillmore of Plymouth, Michigan spent from Wednesday evening until Sunday morning here with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schmidt. Mrs. Fillmore was called here by the death of her mother, Mrs. Caroline Miller.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Perrenoud and children, Diana and Mike, of Donnellson, Mr. and Mrs. John Perrenoud, Jerry Davis and Sharon Fricke called on Mrs. Stella Perrenoud Sunday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. T.T Warren were at Wapello Sunday to visit his sister Mrs. Anna Rouch.
Mr. and Mrs. Norris Haight were Saturday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lauber and family. Mr. and Mrs. Clone Swarts and Mr. and Mrs. Allan Haight were evening visitors. Refreshments of birthday cake and coffee were served in honor of the birthday of Mrs. Norris Haight. The birthday cake was baked by Mrs. Allan Haight.

This week the “Art Around Winfield” is at the dentist’s office with Curt Johnson’s, 6th grade, crayon drawing, called “Submarine.” Also Sherry Brown, 6th grade, in craypas, called “Target for Gold” is there. At Knowles is Christina Hill, 3rd grade, in crayon called “John Deere Tractor.” At Hagge Insurance is Dean Walter, 11th grade, in pencil called “Winchester Guns and Shells.” At Sharp and Goff is John Rucker, 10th grade, in pencil called “Women in Grey.” At Linder Insurance is Curt Gideon, 3rd grade, in craypas called “Abstract.” At the Hair Depot is Jake Settles, 4th grade, in tempra paint called “Gladiator.”
