Out of Winfield’s Past

1993
•Two Winfield men and one child were killed after their car collided with a semi tanker east of Winfield. Killed in the accident were Lester Taylor, 30, and Gary Spearing, 31. Cory Taylor, age four, was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals where he died later.
•Cozy Cozine and son, Coedy, won gold medals at the Iowa Games Summer Sports Festival in Ames. Coedy won the 12—15-year-old age group 198 lb. class by lifting 190, 200, and 205 pounds. Cozy won the Submasters 30-39 year old group and the Open Division by lifting 440 lbs.
•Angela Unkrich, age 12, has advanced to the preliminary rounds of the Bill Riley Iowa State Fair Talent Sprouts and will perform a lyrical ballet.
1998
•Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gowey attended a birthday party Aug. 12 honoring the fifth birthday of their granddaughter, Emma Gowey.
•Mary Remick helped her great-granddaughter celebrate her birthday in Yarmouth.
•Karen Farmer was honored for the occasion of her 50th birthday on August 8. Her family hosted a surprise barbecue supper.
2003
•Elaina Loyd, daughter of Keith and Sue Loyd, captured the blue ribbon at the Iowa State Fair’s spelling bee. She competed against 73 other fourth grade students.
•Robin Therme has announced that she is requesting support as a write-in candidate for the three year, at large vacancy on the Winfield-Mt. Union Board of Education.
•Gwyn McCreight and Marlene Rossiter have both had knee surgery recently. McCreight had hers done at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, and Rossieter is a patient at Henry County Health Center.
2008
•Cozy Cozine won the World AWPC Bench Press Championships in Chicago, Illinois. Cozine won the Masters 50-54, 308 lb. class.
•A two-vehicle accident occurred in the 200 block of South Olive, Wayland. A 1996 Chevy truck driven by Bradley Dwayne Venghaus and a 1977 Ford truck driven by Lillian Leola Chrisinger, both of Winfield, collided in the middle of the roadway.
2013
•The first place winner in this year’s Crooked Creek Dog Show was “Jack.” He is owned by Ron Meyers and won a big ribbon and a $50 gift card to Casey’s. Second place went to Noah Sparrow’s “Tucker,” and third went to “Ruby” who is owned by Deigan Ross and his brother and sister.
•Larry Fred and Patti Gerling are proud grandparents of a new granddaughter, Freyja Ever Alvarez. Her parents are Jessica and Jacob Alvarez of Savannah, Georgia.
