75 years ago — March, 1948
Mrs. Grace Price arrived home on Sunday evening from New Orleans, where she had visited for sometime with her daughter and family.
Mr. and Mrs. George Waste and Peggy of Burlington spent Sunday with Mrs. Don Johnson and Mrs. Jennie Johnson.
Mr. and Mrs. Reggie Van Syoc attended the Albert Hankins funeral at Mt. Pleasant Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Les Hollingsworth visited Sunday afternoon at the C. Hollingsworth home.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mason, Robert and Nancy were supper guests Sunday at the Ivan Lemon home.
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Elliott have moved into the residence recently vacated by the Herbert Hahn family. The Hahns have moved to West Point.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl DeYarman and Twyla have moved from the apartment at the Dal Fleagle residence to the country residence formerly occupied by the late George Kepper.
50 years ago — March, 1973
The Whistle Stop, an eating place, opened for business Wednesday. The Whistle Stop is located on the east side of Main Street across the street from the Farmers National Bank. The caboose is the cocktail lounge and the main building is the dining room. Mrs. H.D. (Phyllis) McDonald and her husband have created a 1900s atmosphere. At present the employees are Mrs. Mike (Marsha) Fink, Jennifer Payne, Mrs. Joe (Karen) Bergen, Mrs. Bud (Gladys) DeYarman, Lana Masson, Roger Finke and Jan Caparoon.
Dr. Donald Westercamp, DMV, has announced he will be taking on a new partner in the Winfield Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Randy Blaylock, who will graduate from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine this spring, will join Dr. Westercamp in June.
Gail Kongable, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Kongable was one of the freshmen nurses capped in Dedication Ceremonies held Sunday in Cedar Rapids.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Ibbotson, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Wallman and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Cornick and Jan surprised their dad and granddad Tuesday night in honor of his 85th birthday which was Wednesday, March 7.
25 years ago — March, 1998
Margery Moore of Davenport called on her uncle, Ralph and Henrietta Howell, Saturday afternoon. She is a retired missionary, having worked in India and Taiwan.
Karen and Paul Ring, Joshua and Ben of Peoria, Illinois spent the weekend with Phil and Shasta Marshall.
Don and Judy Wilson, Columbus Junction, ate breakfast with Ralph and Henrietta Howell Saturday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Steffens will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house, hosted by their children, at the Twin Lakes Country Club in Winfield on Saturday, Marcy 21. Virginia Hansen and Delbert Steffens were married Feb. 21, 1948 at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Oxford Junction, Iowa. They moved to Winfield in 1971. They are the parents of two daughters, Cindy Lane and her husband Dave of Muscatine, and Sherry Honts and husband Mike of Winfield. They have four grandchildren, Carrie and Collin Lane and Sean and Evan Honts.
Wilbur and Arlene Swan will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house March 29 at the Veteran’s building in Winfield. Wilbur Swan and Arlene Rees were married March 26, 1938 at the Methodist parsonage, Winfield, by the Rev. Richard Rowe. Serving as hosts for the occasion are their daughters, Cindy Houston and Nancy Syfert and families. The couple also have five grandchildren. One son, Richard, is deceased.
