100 years ago — March, 1923
Mr. John Schmidt of Burlington visited his brothers, Joe and George, Tuesday, returning home Wednesday morning.
The Home Lumber Company was so rushed with coal orders Tuesday that in addition to their own delivery force, the had to put Frank Paisley and Harlan Courier on as extra.
Mel Unzleker spent Sunday in Wayland. He made the trip by train as the roads didn’t strike him as in very good order for an auto; and they have to be pretty bad when he passes them up.
O.L. Karsten went to Burlington last night and is spending today in that city on business.
75 years ago — March, 1948
Gladys Lonsdale won a I rating in the humorous division at the district speech contest at Williamsburg Wednesday. Mary Ellen Hoover won a II rating in the dramatic division.
Eloise Steffins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Steffins and a senior in Winfield High School, is one of 36 from whom 18 will be selected for Farm Bureau Women’s committee scholarships. The 36 who have qualified as finalist, of whom Miss Stefins is one, will be invited to Des Moines to meet with the state committee in April. Each of the 18 winners, to be selected from these 36, will receive a $280 cash award to be used in a two-year teacher training course.
Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Williams have sold their Winfield residence to Mr. and Mrs. Vern Vance and family and have purchased a property at Crawfordsville. They expect to move about July 1.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Marshall and Beverly of Davenport were weekend guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pallister.
Mrs. Will Kramer and Mrs. Levi Metzger visited Mrs. Ralph Beauchamp at Crawfordsville Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Cornelia Heath and Glenn were Sunday dinner and supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Skipton. Mr. and Mrs. Vern Grim were Monday guests at the John Chilson home, and J.S. Chilson accompanied them home.
50 years ago — March, 1973
Chapter GT, PEO elected the following officers for 1973: Mrs. Doris Carty, president; Mrs. Elsa Grimmer, vice president; Mrs. Lois Miller, recording secretary; Mrs. Lucille DeYarman, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Dorothy Lauer, treasurer; Mrs. Margy Nelson, Chaplin; Mrs. Linda McGohan, guard. Mrs. Carty was elected as a delegate to state convention in June with Elsa Grimmer as alternate.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Walker have been home two weeks. They had been gone since Dec. 17, visiting their daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Marrah and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Sawicki at Phoenix, Arizona. They also visited Mr. and Mrs. Herb Moran at Tucson and attended the Tucson Open.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jacoba have moved to New London.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Lindell arrived March 12 from a two and a half week visit with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Carpenter at Roswell, New Mexico. While they were there Tom Lindell and Leon Peterson arrived to spend spring break from the University.
25 years ago — March, 1998
Travis Kaufman celebrated his sixth birthday with a spaghetti supper at his home in Springdale on March 7 with his parents, Kent and Beth Kaufman, sister Marisa, and grandparents Mary Benson of Winfield, and Dave and Cedra Schlatter of Mt. Pleasant.
Marisa Kaufman celebrated her third birthday in the afternoon of March 15 with a party attended by her family, Kent and Beth and Travis Kaufman; Darlene Houseal, Fairfield; Mark Carmen, Cole and Katie Benson, Mary Benson, Brad Benson, all of Winfield; Dave and Cedra Schlatter of Mt. Pleasant; and Kevin Kaufman, Davenport.
Tuesday, March 17, the Winfield Fire Department was called to the R.L. Chrisinger residence for a furnace malfunction.
