Out of Winfield’s Past

Richard L. Nelson will be celebrating his birthday on July 4, 2014.

Alicia Escher, daughter of Larry and Patty Escher of Winfield, was named to the Dean’s List at Simpson College in Indianola for the spring semester.

Named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2014 semester at Iowa Wesleyan College from Winfield was Vanessa Bryant, Jacob Tolander, Terry Zmolek, and Jordan McLaughlin.

2009

The new playground at the WMU school became a reality as crews moved in and put the new playground together.

Denny and Susan Linder of Danville, Wanda Linder and Jerry Linder of Winfield, and Kirstan and Adam Linder of Waterloo were in Tomah, Wisconsin on June 12 to attend commencement for Nick Linder.

2004

Richard and Cathy Lauderdale celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Mr. Welsch, WMU’s science teacher for 41 years, visited Mrs. Venghaus’s kindergarten class one last time this school year along with his 15-year-old ‘pet’ snake.

Richard D. (Fiddler) and Evelyn (Degen) Beard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 23, 2004.

1999

Marjorie Carden, who has spent the past 30 years helping at the Winfield Public Library was honored with an open house at the Library.

As of July 1, 1999 J.R. Hewitt began operating the Wel-Come Inn. Darrell Hewitt had been running it for 21 years and decided it was time for a change.

The WMU baseball team continued their strong season by upsetting top-ranked, Class 1A, Lisbon 11-3 at Winfield.

1994

Sarah Jane Prior and Todd Alan Davis have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding date of July 9, 1994.

The yard of Spencer and Maxine Hull was named ‘June yard of the Month.’

Mark and Lisa Hunter of Milo, Iowa are the parents of twin girls, Colbi Kay and Coltyn Jane, born May 31, 1994 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

1989

Ground has been broken for a new Casey’s General Store, scheduled to open in October and located at the corners of Ash and Locust.

Mason Thomas was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maxwell on June 14.

Ethel Hatton will be having a public auction on July 13 at 405 N. Locust, Winfield.

1984

Mr. and Mrs. Glen Davis of Winfield celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 24.

Randy Gipple has received his Bachelor of Science degree in Farm Operation from ISU in Ames.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Foster celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 6 in their home.
