Winfield-Mt. Union Superintendent Patrick Coen has been chosen as the new Superintendent for Burlington High School.
Rich Lauderdale, Linda Spence, and Pat Fricke received the Governor’s Volunteer Award at ceremonies held June 20, 2014 in Ottumwa.
Wilma Meeker of Winfield will celebrate her 90th birthday with a bang on Friday, July 4, 2014.
Bill and Cindy Finke of Winfield announce the engagement of their daughter Kiley to Josh Schroeder, son of Randy Schroeder of Clinton. Kiley is a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids and is pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing from Allen College.
Sarah Chaney of Winfield was named to St. Ambrose University Dean’s List for the Spring 2014 term.
2009
Kurtis Helphrey and his dad, Wendell, of Winfield were two of the over 50 participants in the annual Bartelt-Darbyshire Track Ride held July 5.
D&D Door Shop LLC, owned by Roger Richers and Rodney Davis, was one of three businesses in Henry County to win the 2009 Henry County Business Plan Competition.

The WMU Marketing Class and Foods Class donated $750 to the Winfield Community Clinic.
Peoples State Bank presented a donation of $2000 to the Winfield Community Wellness Corporation.
A large crowd of Elders, families, friends, staff, and community members gathered at Sunrise Terrace on June 21 for the dedication of their new Memory Garden.
Adeline Ida “Addie” Johnson, age 96, of Winfield, died June 16, 2014 at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
1999
Confirmation class at the Winfield United Methodist Church included Ashley Mabeus, Shelby Ridley, Elizabeth Hnizdo, Kiley Finke, Colin Peterson, Megan Carberry, Adam Linder, Melissa Thurman, and Matt Thurman.
The Winfield Open Bible Church has received a face-lift, starting with siding. This was the first of an expansion project planned for the church.
1994
The Herman J. Rickey Memorial Fountain was donated to the Winfield Ball Diamonds in memory of Jr. Rickey, who was an avid sports fan of Winfield-Mt. Union athletic programs.
Two trees were donated to the Winfield Ball Diamonds in memory of Gertrude Holtcamp. Gertrude died in a fire that destroyed the family farmhouse where she and her husband lived northeast of Winfield.
Michelle Zaugg and Chad Schneider have announced their engagement and upcoming July 16, 1994, wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Davis observed their 60th wedding anniversary on June 28, 1994.
1989
Shannon Hecker and Roger St. Louis have announced their upcoming marriage on Sept. 10.
Frances M. Glenn passed away at the University Hospitals on June 10.
Longtime resident Gertrude Elnora Shahan, age 82, died July 10 at Mapleleaf Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
1984
Cathy Canby pitched a perfect no-hitter as the WMU girls’ softball team shutout WACO at Olds, 9-0 on June 11. Jenna Krieger and Jackie Johnson each had a triple and a single; Deb Smith, two Singles; and Brenda Anderson, a triple.
A reception and open house was set for June 24 to honor the 30th wedding anniversary of Reb. And Mrs. Brown Garlock. This also commemorated Brown’s 40 years in the ministry.
Dave Therme has been approved as the WMU girls’ basketball coach at the regular school board meeting. Don Bender, who has been the coach for the past 19 years and taken the team to the state four times, will continue teaching social studies.
