75 years ago — April, 1948
W.L. Rukgaber, who had been in the hardware business at Washington since 1933, has sold his store to Walter Zelinsky, Berwyn, Illinois. Mr. Rukgaber has opened a similar store in Winfield in the location occupied by the Maxwell and Hillyard store before moving to Washington.
More than 30 windows have been broken on the west side of the school building when a sudden storm occurred Friday afternoon about 3:30 p.m. Many roofs were damaged and windows broken in residences also.
W.M. Youngman was to be sworn in as mayor of Winfield. The councilmen elected were incumbents E.R. Logan, Richard Lonsdale, Ivan Lemon, Lester Meeker and Wayne Stucker.
50 years ago — April, 1973
The Winfield Lions Club, which was started in 1941, has again had a good year for 1972-1973. In retrospect our 38 members have accomplished quite a lot. They added four new members to the roles: Ivan J. Ham, Richard L. Johnson, Ralph Stuekerjuergen, Michael L. Klopfenstein.
Mr. and Mrs. Espey Schroll hosted a dinner Sunday for their family in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary, which they were celebrating that day. Those present for this memorable occasion were Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Graber, Adrian, Sheldon, Joceyln, Lynita and Trava, a student at Kirksville College; Mr. and Mrs. Don Davis, Sidney and Kipling of Salem; Mr. and Mrs. Duane Graber and Cherry; Mr. and Mrs. Leland Graber and Jerod; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Troyer, Gary, Mark, Cherie, and Julie of Blue Grass, Iowa; Mrs. Schroll’s sister, Mrs. Beatrice Zihlman and Mr. Schroll’s sister, Mrs. Jacob Christner. Afternoon callers in the Schroll home were Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Schroll of Ottumwa. Unable to attend was their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gary LaBounty and family of Silver Springs, MD. They called in the afternoon to congratulate their parents and grandparents on their golden wedding day.
25 years ago — April, 1998
On April 6, the Winfield Police received a report of a new 1998 John Deere farm tractor missing from the lot at Winfield Implement Co., Winfield. Missing is a Model 7810 MFWD with cab. The date the tractor was taken is unknown but was within the past two weeks. Value of the tractor was reported at $75,000. Any person having information to the missing tractor may contact the Winfield Police Department.
Ronnie Van Auken, Winfield, has received the Iowa Lions Foundation Warren Coleman award in recognition of his commitment to serving Lionism. The award is named for longtime Executive Secretary-Treasurer Warren Coleman, who has given freely his time and dedication to the Iowa Lions Foundation and the programs for which it supports. This award is conferred on persons who demonstrate community service, and can only be made possible from a Lions Club contributing $1000 to the Iowa Lions Foundation. Ronnie is a member of the Winfield Lions Club. He recently received an appropriately designed plaque and a lapel pin acknowledging his humanitarian service.
