100 years ago – April, 1923
Public notice is hereby given that a special election of the Consolidated Independent School District of Winfield, in the County of Henry, State of Iowa, will be held on the twentieth day of April, 1923. At said election there will be submitted to the voters of said Consolidated Independent School District, to be by them voted upon the following proposition: Shall the Consolidated Independent School District of Winfield issue bonds in the sum of one hundred sixty thousand dollars ($160,000.00) for the purpose of constructing and equipping a new school house and procuring a site therefore.
75 years ago – April, 1948
The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Eckey will be observed at ta family dinner at their home here Sunday, April 18. The former Mattie Smith and Charles Eckey were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Moore at Burlington at seven p.m. on April 20, 1898. Mrs. Moore was a sister of Mrs. Eckey. Mr. and Mrs. Eckey moved from Mount Union to their farm north of Winfield in 1901, where they lived until 1943. At that time they moved into their present home in Winfield. Mr. and Mrs. Eckey have two living children, Harold B. Eckey of Des Moines and Mrs. Ben Nichols of Nichols; and two living grandchildren, Thomas M. Eckey of Des Moines and Mrs. Maynard F. Meacham of Cedar Rapids.
The Winfield FFA chapter will be well represented at the Southeast Iowa District FFA contest Friday. The chapter is sending the reporter’s scrap book, a public speaking contestant, an extemporaneous speaker, and a parliamentary procedure team, plus several members who will be spectators. The local members had tryouts to determine the contestants. The extemporaneous speaker will be Ronnie Rodruck; the public speech contestant will be Jim Evans; the parliamentary procedure team is composed of five members, Virgil Maxwell, Bob Johnson, Gilbert Crawford, Roger Williams, and Keith Cummings.
Maynard Hill placed second in the 100-yard dash and Ed Grimmer was second in the discus throw at Mount Pleasant last Wednesday in the triangular track meet. Mount Pleasant and New London were the other two schools competing in the meet.
Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Smith of Inglewood, California are parents of a daughter, born April 12. Mrs. Smith was formerly Joanne Russell, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Russell.
50 years ago – April, 1973
The annual community Easter Cantata will be presented on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Winfield. Soloists are Marilyn Lambert, Shirley Textor, Leon Rossiter, and Vincent Lindeen. A brass quartet will play as a prelude. The quartet consists of Dave Grimmer, Mike Honts, Karen Krueger, and Vicki Rossiter.
Annette Jennings and Keith Hudson, both of Winfield, will represent Henry County 4-H at the area state 4-H officer interviews in Muscatine on April 11. Annette, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Royal Jennings, has been a 4-H member for six years. She attended the State 4-H Conference in 1972. Annette is a senior at Winfield-Mt. Union. Keith, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hudson, has been a 4-H member for five years. He was a music delegate at the State 4-H Conference in 1972. He is currently county 4-H president and a senior at Winfield-Mt. Union.
