What was a 22-7 Pekin lead nearly turned into disaster as North Mahaska fought back to tie the game at 22-22 in the fourth quarter and even had a chance to win the game late in regulation.
Reed Lauderman made the game-saving tackle at the 20-yard line on a completed deep pass by North Mahaska on the final play of regulation, and Pekin’s defense held in overtime to give the Panthers a shot at the win.
Henry Adam scored untouched on a counter play on the Panthers’ first offensive play in overtime to seal the deal and keep the Panthers unbeaten.
Adam caught a 52-yard pass from quarterback Riley Smith early in the game to give Pekin a 6-0 lead and then had a 90-yard catch from Smith on the first play of the second quarter that put Pekin up 14-0 after the two-point conversion. Adam had a 47-yard catch in the third quarter to set up his third touchdown in regulation play. Overall, Adam had five catches for 205 yards and rushed for 23 yards.
Nolan Glick carried the ball 17 times for 47 yards, and Riley Smith gained 16 yards in nine carries. Smith was 7 of 10 passing for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Adam and Reed Lauderman each had a two-point conversion.
Defensively, Lauderman had 12 tackles, nine solo. Ethan Porter and Brogan Spray each had a sack. Adam had three tackles for a loss, while Porter had two, and Glick and Spray each had one. Landon Crow and Glick each had four solo tackles, Smith and Adam each had three, and Carson Comstock and Porter each had two.
Pekin (6-0) will face off against Danville (5-1) Friday night, October 10, at Danville.
