Mrs. Arendt's 5th-grade Reading Class and Mrs. Lyle's 5th-grade Science class teamed up to learn about agriculture and harvest. In reading class, the students read about agriculture and products that are produced in Iowa from the Iowa Ag Today publication, which was provided by the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation. In science, the students did an investigation on corn diversity and the different ways corn is used.
Pekin graduates AJ Neff and Dalton Vetter brought a John Deere combine to school to show the students what it is used for and how a combine works. The two farmers talked about how important farming is in our community and what is expected of them on a daily basis. The students also enjoyed meeting the family farm dog, Willow.
After the presentation, together the classes learned how to read a yield map and analyzed the differences between yellow, white, chief, and black popcorn. They also shared products they brought from home that contained corn.
The 5th-grade students are looking forward to their monthly agriculture lessons. Plans are to incorporate a variety of ag lessons into their monthly units. If anyone would like to present to the students, please contact the 5th-grade teachers Angie Arendt or Angela Lyl, or Instructional Coach Johannah Neff.
