Cindy McCan, who has served as the Richland Public Library Director since April 1, 2010, is retiring.
Throughout her years as director, Cindy has welcomed patrons of all ages to the library. She encourages reading printed materials of all types, use of computers to explore topics, and interaction among peers by providing an “in-house” collection of toys, games, puzzles, and art materials.
Shortly after her arrival in 2010, Cindy asked the City to clean and repaint the library basement. The joint effort among Cindy, the library board, and City Hall eventually led to use of the basement as a pleasant, carpeted meeting room for library programs and public gatherings.
Another early project Cindy undertook was overhauling the library’s collection and online cataloging. Now the collection is regularly updated to ensure that patrons have the latest print material, books on tape, and DVDs available. Cindy created the early reader, young adult, and graphic novel sections of the library. Historical records and papers have been cataloged and have a special section in the library.
Cindy has been responsible for beginning and maintaining a variety of programs. For a number of years she has hosted afterschool programs for kids. Jeannie Pedrick said, “I am so grateful how Cindy works with kids to provide activities, books, and games that interest each one. She is always up on the latest materials. My grandkids love coming to the library. Cindy has made reading fun for them.”
Recently, Cindy added a ‘Tiny Tots’ program geared to preschool children, ages 1-5. “Attending Tiny Tots has been a wonderful experience for my family,” said Bonnie Greiner. She added, “My children really enjoy the program and that’s all thanks to Cindy for working so well with little ones.”
Teens have also had the opportunity to join a group to meet their needs. Adults enjoy programming which, over the years, has included book talks, local speakers, educational presentations, and Bingo. About 10 years ago, Cindy supported the formation of a book club for adults. They continue to meet monthly for lunchtime book discussions.
Cindy also expanded the summer reading program for kids from a 1- or 2-week program to an 8-week program. Currently participants enjoy special guest speakers, crafts, snacks, and the chance to earn prizes through reading activities. Adults have summer reading challenges too. In addition, winter reading programs were created by Cindy for patrons of all ages.
Several years ago Cindy worked to initiate an annual meeting between Keokuk County librarians and the county supervisors. Meetings have centered on the importance of county funding to libraries, and librarians have showcased their programs to the supervisors and shared how they have benefited from county monies.
Reflecting on her time as librarian, Cindy remarked, “It’s been an honor to serve as Richland’s Library Director for the past 15 years. I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Richland community and helping people with their library needs. I want to thank the library’s Board of Trustees for their support and guidance over the years which has ensured the library’s success.”
Mike Adrian, President of the Board of Trustees, noted, “Cindy has been a valuable asset to the Richland Public Library where she has fostered literacy, education, and friendships for all our patrons. The Board is immensely grateful for the lasting contributions Cindy has made over the years to the library and the community.” He added, “We wish her our best as she begins her retirement, and while we will miss her dearly, Cindy has placed the Richland Public Library in an excellent position to thrive.”
The public is invited to a farewell open house honoring Cindy on Saturday, March 29, 2025 from noon to 3 p.m. at the library.
