Students use their written communication skills

Recently, students from Pekin Community School District wrote letters to veterans who will take part in the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. Students in Mrs. Wittrock’s Applied Communications class composed letters to express their appreciation for their service to our country. This is the thirteenth year students have sent letters to the veterans going on the spring flight. The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight departs from the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids and takes nearly 100 World War II and Korean War Veterans to Washington, DC. The goal of this flight is for the veterans to see several memorials built in their honor.These same students participated in a project called "Hearts Around the USA” and made valentines for third graders at Indian Springs Elementary School in Kingsport, Tennessee. The goal for the project was to receive a valentine from each of the 50 states by Valentine's Day. Mrs. Wittrock’s class represented Iowa. Both of these projects were meaningful real life applications of writing for the Pekin students.
