Washington County Extension Clover University Summer Day Camps open for Registration

Washington County Extension and Outreach’s summer day camps “Clover University” is schedule with 10 individual day camp opportunities. These camps serve a variety of ages from kindergarten — 12th grade. 4-H membership or previous 4-H involvement is not required. “Sprouting Up Science!” is open to youth who have completed kindergarten — 1st grade as of June 2024. They will have an action-packed day all in the name of growing. They will roll up their sleeves, dig hands in soil, plant seeds, learn how to grow food, and learn how science impacts our environment through plants. Learn what makes plants grow: sun, water, soil, and air and why they are important. Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. Camp will be held June 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of Dallmeyer Hall in Washington. “Quilting Camp” Spend a week this summer as a quilter at Quilt Camp. All skill levels are welcome to learn from sewing volunteers from across the county. They will support participants in completing a Quilt of Valor® that week at camp. All quilts will be exhibited at the Washington County Fair as a quilting exhibit and then awarded to Veterans on July 19 at the County Fair. This new club will teach and develop the art of quilting, provide youth an artistic and creative opportunity and give youth a chance to support and know a Veteran from this community. This camp is open to youth who have completed 6th-12th grade as of June 2024. The cost is $130 which includes all quilting supplies. Other Registration deadline of May 10. “Kids in the Kitchen” Explore different foods and safe handling practices in the kitchen. Healthy eating habits will come into practice as you make your own snacks, practice measuring, mixing, reading recipes, and more! Lunch and snacks will be provided. Camp will be in the basement of Dallmeyer Hall in Washington. The cost for this camp is $25.

“Everybody Kneads Bread!” is open to youth who have completed 4th-6th grade as of June 2024. Everybody Kneads Bread camp will explore the science behind baking bread while learning where our food comes from, playing games and having fun. Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. Camp will be held June 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of Dallmeyer Hall in Washington. “Art Adventures” is open to youth who have completed kindergarten-1st grade as of June 2024. Create and explore during this art camp with take-home projects focused on elements of line, shape, color, form, and texture through integrated art and literacy activities! Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. Camp will be held June 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of Dallmeyer Hall in Washington. “Babysitting Basics” is a weeklong course to teach the responsibilities of a babysitter, what employers expect, caring for infants and toddlers, age-appropriate toys, how to handle emergencies and basic first aid. This camp is open to youth who have completed 5th grade. The cost for this babysitting training is $40. Participants will receive a babysitting starter bag full of goodies. “On Their Own & Ok” is open to youth who have completed 4th-6th grade as of June 2024. On Their Own and OK builds skills in youth to help them provide a safe and healthy environment while home alone. Participants learn about preparing meals, steps for emergencies and fun, safe and entertaining activities that don’t involve the screen. Youth left at home by themselves without self-care skills may find ways to occupy their time that parents or guardians do not support. Some young people may truly be fearful of staying home alone. On Their Own and OK builds skills in youth, as well as incorporates ways for parents or guardians in the home to support this step toward independence. “Chef for a Day” is open to youth who have completed 2nd — 3rd grade as of June 2024. Participants will become a Chef for a Day and learn about where our food comes from and how to properly prepare and cook a variety of delicious dishes. Participants will make their own lunch and snacks while at camp. Camp will be held June 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dallmeyer Hall lower level in Washington. “Spy School” is open to youth who have completed 2nd-3rd grade as of June 2024. Learn detective skills like fingerprinting, opening letters without a trace, and how to write hidden messages as you solve the mystery of the disappearing clover at Spy School! Beverage and snacks will be provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch. Camp will be held July 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of Dallmeyer Hall in Washington. Space is limited to 20 registrations for each camp. Registrations accepted on a first come, first served basis while space is available as payments are received. Scholarships are available upon request. Register online at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/washington/summer-programs. Make payments to Washington County Extension Office. The fees for service are used to offset direct expenses of the program and to support the 4-H Youth Development County Extension Program. No refunds after June 1 unless camp was canceled due to low registration numbers.
